Why would some1 have all the arsenal drilled negative?
« on: November 22, 2006, 12:59:07 PM »
i bowled with a friend today and i noticed that all her balls (x factor, flash force) were drilled and then i asked her whether she goes to tournaments (junior) with those balls and she said yes.

now, im not too sure about the flash force, but i know that the x factor is pretty strong, if she goes to a tournament with sport condition, and those balls drilled negative, what would be the point??

shes stroker, low revs.

uhmm according to the machine, she throws around 20-22 km/h

and thats faster than my shots (19-20)

her track is pretty far away from the finger and thumb hole, does the track has anything thing to do with this type of drilling?

i thought it was good to have versatility in the arsenal, so, something from strong to week, but i never saw something strong...

i tried her x factor (i was bowling 2hand style today) and when the ball hits the dry part, it just died... (almost the same reaction i was getting on my terminal velocity that was drilled negative as well)

And which today 22 km/h goes to about 13-14 mph, which is a pretty slow ball speed.

uhmm im not too sure about the accuracy of the machine meters, but its about 3 - 3.5 second from the release to the pins

by negative i was refering that the pin was below and left of the middle finger with the cg on the right side of the center of grip (maybe im not using the right term)

and of course, shes righty

Most of my stuff is drilled with the pin right around the middle finger. With me being a spinner that is what works for me. I have tried with "normal" pin placements and those have worked but most of the equipment is with pin on midline or a little to the left of it.

ohhh that might be the reason of the layout!

close to spinner means low track??

From what I can figure, this will cause the ball to flare less, so I could see a slower player using this drill to keep the ball from overreacting. Still, with such low speeds, I can see both of you having trouble with agressive equipment burning up ("died" as you said). You might want to try polishing up the cover to help the ball retain some energy, or go to a less agressive ball.

nova, yea what u saying is correct, maybe the actual layout is not designed for the way i play the lanes (was playing 15-5) on a fresh oil ths, my friend was getting the reaction she wants tho (not a big backend but it continues thru the pins). The ball was already polished and i dont really think she throws it slow.

anyway, i think the best answer is from sdbowler

how much mph will be for a 3-3.5 seconds count from the release to the pins? i only know km/h (oversea education)

When you say her balls are all drilled negative, I'm assuming you mean with the pin left of the middle finger.  This may or may not be a weak drilling.  It all depends on her PAP location.  If she is a low tracker, the pin to PAP distance, which is the major factor in tuning the ball's reaction, could be really quite strong.  You can't make any assumptions from the pin location unless you know the pin to PAP distance.  --  JOhnP

well according to your definition of negative...many of my bowling balls are drilled negative....but they sure have positive results for me.

just look at my profile to see what i mean....i throw the ball 16 to 17mph

thx guys for clarifying the definition of negative (i thought it was depending on the center of grip and not on the PAP)

but now my question is:

how far away from the PAP is a layout considered to be negative?

If I am correct and I don't know if I am, I think the answer is 6 3/4 or 6 3/8 from pap is the fartherest you can go without going into a negative quad.....
