Will the ABC or WIBC or USBC be around...
« on: August 27, 2003, 10:41:35 PM »
in the next 25 years? Or will bowling leagues die in that time, due to lack of participation and interest by the next generation? Please don't be annoyed if you are under the age of 20 and think I'm slamming you. That is not the intent. What seems to be happening is less and less bowlers coming out of the junior ranks to compete in the adult leagues.

HA HA HA HA HEE HEE HEE HO HO HO!! LOL!  That's a good joke!  Sorry I'm so cynical - I'm a glass is half empty type.  Besides, if doing what was best for the sport (game, whatever) were the focal point for the people who make the calls, this would already be a done deal.  Not trying to dash anyone's hopes, but I think this is a power struggle and nothing less.  Nobody is willing to give up their little empire.

As for the league bowler, people can't even keep the commitment they made to their spouses anymore, how do you expect them to remain committed to a game?  Sorry, but I was raised to be a man of my word.  If I tell you I'll be there, I'm gonna be there.  None of this showing up for 3 weeks then quitting crap.  People like that really annoy me, if you hadn't noticed.  Granted, there are some unfortunate circumstances that force some people to leave - and I understand and do not mind people in that situation.  It's the guy who isn't responsible enough or have the common courtesy to uphold his end of the bargain that I am speaking of here.

I hope the BPAA takes over. After trying to force the merge, without listening to what was keeping people from voting for it, Roger D. and his counterpart from the WIBC can take it on the chin. All they had to do was keep the locals intact and work on merging those later. Now if it does happen it will cause splinter groups and will not be helpful for the growth of bowling.

Okay, now that I vented...

Love the question Rantings!  Now on to my answer...

I do believe we need new leadership in our sport, but not in the way that the others are proposing.  We have several models already in place of what works, and also models of what doesn't work.  In the words of a good friend of mine, success can be duplicated.  So can failure.  Take all the bean counters, kick their arses out of that office with the lakeside view and put them in a bowling center for 3 months.  Let them observe the every day goings on of a successfull bowling center.  Tell them to ask questions.  Then send that bean counter back to his employer (maybe AMF) and have him tell the big whigs what he saw!

Again, this isn't like learning how to do brain surgery or how to do calculus without a pen or piece of paper.  This is basic stuff.

What we need is teachers.  Teachers and people who can get over their egos and actually learn something that they don't already know!!!  The BPAA is a pretty cool orginzation that has already started with this idea, from what I can tell.  Strike Ten and other bowling promotional tools are great too.  But none of it works IF...that's the key word, if if if if if if if.  You can run all sorts of promotions, go out and work the public into a bowling frenzy all day, but IF you don't know how to treat people, how to keep your machines running, how to use your new phoenix oil machine, and how to clean up after a Friday night open bowling party when people spill beer, food and everything else on the floor that you can think of, then none of it amounts to a whole helluva lot!

Too many bowling centers are too laid back, and just give very poor service.  I live in Michigan (THE bowling state) and would say about 80% of centers are guilty of this outside of the Detroit area.  And inside metro Detroit, still too many centers are also guilty of that.

In the next 25 years, who is going to be around?  ME!!!  That's who.  Are you???

We have the knowledge right at our fingertips (no pun intended).  All we have to do is look out and see what is possible, and then duplicate it.  This idea that a centralized, even corporatized body is going to save our sport from sinking any deeper really scares me.  Please think about what you are saying.  Let us use our own facilities (brains) to further our cause.  And sharing our ideas in awesome forums like this is how we learn from one another.

Ok, I'm tired now.  Maybe I'm getting a little sappy, but I've definitely lost my train of thought.  Great thread Rantings.

So maybe I'm spoiled up here in Michigan, because I've never heard of anybody not getting their 300 ring.  That is bad.  I didn't realize is was a problem elsewhere.

Good info about the SMO lefty.  I still think a lot of things sound good at first, but then more seems to change later.  Let's not forget that a LOT of the smaller associations will be absorbed by bigger associations, thus elimination a lot of the small town city tournaments that currently go on. I suppose if ABC, WIBC, and the others merge ONLY for sanctioning purposes, then ok, I like it.  But I just don't see that happening.  I see sanctioning rates going up higher than ever before, the rich getting richer and giving nothing back, and a new corporate way of handling things in the sanctioning world.  That's what I was talking about lefty.

It doesn't all sound that bad, but just you wait and see!
