Hello folks
« on: January 30, 2017, 01:52:08 PM »
New to the site and just getting back into bowling, so I wanted to say hello. After a twenty year hiatus and I can't believe all of the new balls and companies making them.

I still have my AMF Cobra urethane and the Piranha from back when and that is what I am using.
Bowling at an old house with 97 year old maple lanes and I am carrying a 174 average.

What should I look for in a new ball? Thank you all in advance.

Joe

Welcome.

I would find a good reputable pro shop in your area. One that will take the time to watch you bowl a few frames.

Any PSO (Pro Shop Operator) worth anything will give you some suggestions. A PSO that tries to sell you the biggest hooking, most expensive ball, I would be a little wary of.

We do not know about your stats, ball speed, revs, tilt, etc., so it may be challenging to get advice.

I would look for some entry, or mid performance pieces, with a smooth reaction. All companies make great entry level equipment, IMO. You are going to hear from staffers, that this company is the best, that company is garbage, blah blah blah.

With 97 year old maple lanes you will want something weak by today's standards.  Wood is soft compared to synthetics so look at the entry level (or slightly above) pearl reactives.  In the Brunswick lineup the Rhino would be a starting place with the original Fanatic a step up in overall reaction.  Best of luck to you.

Hi, welcome to the site and back to the great sport of bowling.

I tend to agree with what has been posted already.  Since you did not state any of your stats (RH/LH, ball speed, bowler style - stroker, tweener, cranker, preferred line of play, rev rate, PAP, etc) or what the lane conditions were like that you are seeing, it would be more beneficial to you to have a PSO that can watch you bowl and that knows the center you are bowling on to make a ball recommendation.  Also probably best to start with a weaker ball if those are old wood lanes.  If you have any other questions, the helpful bowlers on this site will try to answer them for you.  Good luck and good bowling.

Go to a night of league and watch what those bowlers are using. It will give you a good starting point at the least.

Thanks folks and I am already learning.
I am a right handed bowler and from what I understand I am a "stroker". My ball speed is around 15 mph and I have no idea what my rev rate would be.

My normal starting point is my right foot on the center dot throwing out over the second arrow and working from there.
