Worst bowling injury witnessed during league?
« on: September 29, 2006, 12:15:06 PM »
During league I once trashed my wrist during warmups due to a very dangerous way of cranking the ball. That was 5 years ago and my hand still hurts a little.

I once saw a lady in 2005 in my league stick and somehow fall forward and bashed her kneecap as hard as you could imagine on the ball return strip on the lane a few feet out. The paramedics came as most everyone stopped. She couldn't move as the manager was icing her. She was flat out on the lane. She returned months later and never saw her again.

I also saw a mid 40 man several years ago tear up his knee when he threw a shot and couldn't continue. They had to make the rest of his score as an absent and he never was able to bowl again.

Anything else anyone saw?

I've torn a muscle in my forearm once and once last season in my bicep. When I did it last season, it was in the 3rd frame of the 1st game and me being the complete idiot that I am I kept bowling. Ended up taking 4 weeks off after that.

In an older house with wood approaches, a guy ran out a shot and slid.
One of the boards was splintered and sent it right up his thigh.
EMS had to cut him free from the approach.
It tore his leg up something terrible.
He sued the house but settled out of court on the advice of his attorney.

He's not allowed to bowl at that house anymore.

I had a friend once run out a strike and fall over the ball return on the next pair.  Tore his knee up so bad he was out of bowling for eighteen months.  Needless to say he never runs out a strike anymore.

Worst personally, I like many people pick up a ball using just my fingers if I'm taking it out of the bag, getting it off the rack, etc. I'd developed this little trick where I could pop it off my hand and catch it in the same motion with the same hand.

That was fine until the night my middle finger stuck in the finger insert and the ball came back over my hand instead of popping off. It bent the last joint in my middle finger backwards at a 90 degree angle. You could hear the tendon ripping as it went.

Tendons are made up on tiny strands; I basically tore 95%+ of the strands in that tendon. Great thing about tendons, though -- if you don't completely tear them, they will self-regrow around the spare strands. I now have full movement of the joint, although I've got a knot on the side of my finger and it hurts sometimes when I get it caught in the dog's leash. I only took two weeks off from bowling.

Worst injury I ever knew of was a girl who blew out her ACL, MCL and PCL at the foul line and ended her career.

Saw a guy completely tear his bicep muscle, his arm was dangling and it looked like all the muscle was gone...had major surgery and never bowled again (to my knowledge, he was about 55 when this happened).

There was a friend of mine who had a car accident and had to have stitches put in his lower leg just below his left knee.  He was about 400 pounds.  During his slide after rolling the ball, he stuck, fell, and his left knee came down on the skinny strip that separates the gutters.  His stitches came apart and his previous injury reopened leaving a pool of blood on the approach and a gash in his leg where you could see down to his bone.  Good Times!!!

Saw this young kid who was a really good bowler had a very high back swing. Well, on this one night as he was ripping the cover off the ball, he hit his ankle bone on the inside of his slide foot. Needless to say, he went head over heels onto the lane, split his head open and broke his ankle. There was a pool of blood on the lane and he was laying in a heap at the arrows. People were running around trying to get him help. He came back about 6 weeks later and his backswing was alot lower from then on. He just could not rip the cover off the ball anymore. But he did become a more versatile player.

about 10 years ago a friend of mine was up to bowl and we heard a "pop" and he went down..snapped his left femur during his slide.
it took 18 months to heal properly and he didn't bowl for 5-6 years.

along time ago I used to wear a robb'y revs wrist brace.one night I triped over someones bag and when I fell I held my hand out on instinct to catch my fall.when I looked at my hand that was in the brace I noticed my middle finger was bent in the middle knuckle and the tip of the finger was behind my pinky finger.I've never wore a wrist brace again!

Wasn't in league bowling, but one night during Cosmic, some punk 15-16 year old kid was goofing around trying to throw his ball as hard as he could...  Well all was going well, and he was really whipping his 15lb ball down the lane.  Well while doing this i guess he didn't pay much attention that his hand was sweating as swelling.  Well the ball hung up on his hand once, and went straight up in the air at least 10 ft  and of course came right back down.  Well he wasn't the brightest crayon in the box because he didn't get out of the way of the ball.  It missed his head by about an inch or two, and slammed onto his foot right above the big toe. Well this amount of pressure split his big toe in about 4 places as well as split his shoe.  He ended up having quite a few stitches to sew his toe back together, as well as 5 or 6 broken bones in his foot.

Worse part of the whole thing, he got blood all over my brand new synthetic approaches.

Saw a guy hang in the ball and endup in the air out to the arrows.  He came down in the left channel hitting his face on the edge of the lane.  Put a bruise about the size of a large grapefruit on the side of his face and one really great shiner.  He finished bowling that night.

Guy on my team hit a wall next to the lane after a shot and the clock fell down.  He tried to catch it but the front that was made of glass shattered.  Nothing too bad but he cut his fingers.  Of course they were his bowling fingers.  Now he knows that in dangerous it's good to have an instict to use his left hand!
