Would you bowl..............
« on: February 18, 2005, 04:18:46 PM »
in a league that is based on +/- average.
Example:

Team     Ave   game 1    game 2    game 3    series   points
  1      1000  980/-20   1050/+50*  1020/+20   +50*      2
  2       900  930/+30*   870/-30    940/+40*  +40       2

I like the idea of this format over the normal handicap or scratch league because it makes it to where your chances of winning are based solely on how well you bowled for your given skill level and it would keep stacked teams from winning all the time, I think it would get more people into bowling leagues also.

I am going to propose it to the owner of the local house for our non- sanctioned summer league.

That's just another way of running a league with 100% handicap using team averages rather than individual averages.  There's absolutely no difference.

True but some people don't like the idea of handicap.
Same thing but different because of the psychological aspect.

I'm not trying to be mean here, just honest.  I think we have enough "trickery" giong on with our sport that we don't need anymore.  People are already "tricked" into believing they are 200+ average bowlers.  The game was more fair and more enjoyable at the competitive level when things were simple.  Numbers don't lie.

It isn't trickery just what I feel is the most fair format for all involved and reworded a bit for the people that don't care for the term handicap.
It will not be advertised as a scratch league or handicap league only the exact format, so I don't see how that is trickery.

The whole reason for wanting to do this besides trying to get more bowlers involved is.

We have a team that has the 5 highest averages in the whole league and some have quit because of it.
As far as averaging 200 it does mean something where I bowl. The center has been open for over 40 years and there has never been a 800 shot and only 4 300s in the last 3 years. It is a very tough shot that is why I bowl there.
I have a 179 ave in that house and I am more proud of that than my 198 at another house that has a THS.

Fair enough.

I wish there was a house like yours around here.  The only one that is tough is a dump that nobody wants to bowl at.  They haven't updated anything in their center and have milked it for all it's worth.  A modern center with a fair shot, that's what I'm waiting for.

I like that format.  That way its not about who scores the highest, its about bowling better vs. your average than the other team.

Only question is...is this system more susceptible to sandbagging?

No more than a regular handicap league. Everyone that has a book average would use it for the first 12 games/4 weeks.

A few months ago the American Bowler had a sample of this 100% handicap. It is by far the most fair way for leagues to go but most have been doing the 80% or 90% of 200 or higher for so long that most don't know the benefits of this. More people need to start bringing this format up at your league meetings to start the change.
