Would you bowl Nationals if there were no Prize Fund?

Would you bowl for just an Eagle?

Sidepots and Brackets don't count.

According to the Prize Fund from 2008 for Nationals, about 1/3 of the total money taken in is used for expenses, the remaining 2/3 is used for prize fund.

If that is an accurate number, then if there were no prize fund for Nationals, your entry fee should be about $50 total for all 3 events.

How many more people would bowl if all they had to pay was $50 instead of $150??

If the fee was reduced and there was side action. I would definitely bowl. A certificate or plaque with you finish position if you were in the top ten and eagle for the winner would be enough for me.

My question in a form of an answer is, who will bowl in any tournament that has an entry fee without a prize fund? I know your local youth/adult tournaments don't have the prize fund, only scholarship money to the winners! But, who going to spend all that money for a trip to nationals and not have a chance to win part or all of your money back in the form of prize fund and brackets? Just my $.02, Bruce

I would, and even at the current entry fee rates. What price do you put on winning something and being able to call yourself a national champion?

I don't know about you, but for me, the thing keeping me from going to Nationals isn't the $150 entry fee, it's the many hundreds of dollars it would cost me to travel to wherever, ship my equipment, pay for a hotel room, entertainment while I'm there (especially in Reno or Vegas),... .  A hundred bucks is a hundred bucks, don't get me wrong, but entry fees aren't even close to the real cost of bowling Nationals.

I'd love to go, but to go to Vegas next year would cost me $1000.

The majority of bowlers at nationals must be willing to as they have virtually no chance of cashing.

Most of going to nationals to me is the trip/vacation and the highly unlikely chance at an eagle.

In my opinion there should be two divisions.... the open division where everyone competes and no money involved and then an elite division where the money should be involved because these participants should be the best of the best cometing on a national stage.

Question: How would that be different than the U.S. Open or the USBC Masters? I am not exactly sure of the format for either tournament but I thought they were open to everyone including PBA members.

The reason I bring this up in addition to the no prize fund league thread is helping to expose bowling's misgivings when it comes to the difference between Pros and Ams.

Almost every amateur bowling tournament that has a prize fund, excludes Professional bowlers. Megabuck tournaments have banked on the fact that if a so-called "pro" is not eligible to win, then more people are willing to bowl.

In my opinion, this is where bowling as a whole has failed miserably. Bowling is the only game/sport that teaches its participants to play beneath their ability to gain an advantage. It's the only game/sport in which you are penalized for becoming a better bowler by being excluded from tournaments.

We must change the attitude of bowlers as a whole from a sandbagging, average controlling nation to a always try your best, become the best bowler you can nation.

Money in leagues and money in Amateur tournaments is the root of the present attitude. If the only way to make money was to pursue the professional side of the game/sport, then EVERYONE who wanted to make money (not talking sidepots and brackets here) would have to earn every cent and train to become a better bowler.

Until there is a clear line between Amateur and Professional there will be no big money for our Pros and it will always be easy for an uninformed person to dismiss the true talent and sportsmanship of our Professionals.
