Wrist Supports/Braces
« on: September 30, 2006, 01:54:36 PM »
As you can see from my profile, I have degenerative arthritis, so I need a hand/wrist support or give up the game.  The one I have been using is no longer getting the job done ... degenerative works that way.
I am now looking at the following bionic options:
Robby's Rev III
Team Cobra - Cobra III
Storm Strongarm Plus
Storm Gadget XP
Moro Pro Release Extended

Can anyone tell me which is the best for both supporting the wrist and keeping the hand and fingers in the right position.  The descriptions all look pretty much the same, but the prices are very different.

Hands down, The Moro is the best out there.  I used to tinker with braces and had tried 3 of the ones you have listed.  The Storm Gadget is too confining IMHO.  THe Robby's is not enough and the Moro is just right.

Wylie, can you tell why the Gadget was too confining to you?  Im looking at either the Moro or the Storm.

I use the Vice brace I would not say that its any better than any of the others you have listed but i do like it better than the robbys which I have also used.
The Pro release for me I could never get the strap around the Wrist tight enough and the adjustments were to hard to make once you had it on.

If you can, I'd suggest trying any of these on - either in a pro shop or asking someone on the lane using it.

Finding a wrist support design that works for you and fits well is a tough thing. Any of these offer certain differences which might make them most suitable for your sitaution or the way you bowl.

Personally, I am a big fan of the Moro ProRelease, for various reasons. Fisrt of all, I like the "snap" holder which works mechanically and can be easily taken off for spares, and then refitted without messing with velcro and the ever different feel when getting it back on. Additionally, I like the fact that you can adjust both wrist cup position and axis tilt of your palm. Finally, the device is quite light and not too broad.

I use one, because I have to take care of a hurt wrist, and I use it without the finger extension and without the palm strips for a free hand movement. It serves well and has seen more than 1 year of service, witzh just minor wear to the neoprene padding. Nice item, worth the money, even though it has some minor design flaws.

I will agree with Dizzyfugu on this go to a pro shop and try each one before purchasing one of them like he stated there are minor difference's in each one so trying them first might save you money.

I personally felt the Storm was to big in the wrong areas.  It just didn't feel as natural as the Moro.  One other thing I didn't like about the storm was that it just hangs loose and then stops as you raise your wrist.  You caan bend your wrist forwards, but back only to the point that the "cupping" is set for.

All in all, it is just a matter of personal preference.  If you can try them out like the others are suggesting, that is your best option.  Then decide which one to spend your money on.

After continually getting severe pain in my wrist after bowling, I was forced to go to a wrist brace. Last week I got a pro-release and truthfully it has been the best thing for me. My bowling was really not affected by it, it offers firm support, and most importantly, I bowled 6 games on Thursday night and my wrist was fine the next morning. I haven't tried any other devices but I highly recommend the pro-release

I also use the Moro Pro-Release, but unfortunately not the extended version.  Mine has definitely helped with the tendonitis that I sometimes have, and the adjustability is great, helping me to add quite a few extra revs that I normally didn't have.  However, if I was going to buy a Moro again, I would definitely get the extended version that covers the fingers, as I think it would help prevent the fingers from flying open at release, as mine are sometimes inclined to do when I get technique lazy.  Definitely lose some backend when this happens.

I've used the Robbys I, the Moro (non-extended) and one I don't see listed here, the Cobra3. I've also test-fitted the older Storm design (Strongarm?) and the Robbys II and Robbys III; haven't had the chance to look at the Gadget yet.

I strongly prefer the Robbys I to the Moro, for a couple of different reason. One, you can make adjustments easier. Two, the Robbys I covers the fingers. Third, it's just more comfortable overall.

The Robbys II is much lighter, but doesn't offer enough wrist cup. The Robbys III is similar to the Cobra3 (i.e., one finger extended).

I prefer my Robbys to my Cobra3, but if you're looking for something that really holds your hand in a set position, the Cobra3 will fit the bill. It's an older, more archaic design but it works. It also offers more cup than even the Robbys.

The basic piece of advice is to just test as many as you can and pick what's best for your own personal preferences.
