I wouldn't say that they are out of style...just not as popular as 15's.

At least 90% of the heavy (14 - 16 lbs) balls I sell are 15 lbs.  14 lbs is next with 16 lbs being the least.  --  JohnP

I still throw 16, as do most of my local friends.  However, I do know a number of players who have dropped from 16 to 15 within the past few years.

I had dropped about 2 years ago, and have just again started adding some 16# equipment into my 15# arsenal. I have noticed that no matter what anyone tries to tell me, that I do notice more hitting power with 16# equipment.

Hell, I've considered moving down to 14 as I still ping too many 9 pins with my 15lb stuff. It's a matter or preference, but, for me, the strength and hitting power built into today's gear leaves little to no need to throw 16. I think the only exception is maybe in terms of light oil gear that doesn't flare. For anything that hooks, however, 15 hits just as hard and tends to give better deflection. That's my experience, anyhow.

My experience with bowling with both 16 and 15 is that I don't throw as well with 16s but I get way more carry.  Particularly when there is a lot of carrydown.!

Bowled in a league that the lefties all slumped but one guy.  He was the only one of us with 16 pound equip.  The rest of us with 15 really suffered as it turned out there was mysteriously a stripper problem on the left side!

I've also had a 299 with a 16 that I would rate the throwing way lower than the other 30 or 40 258 pluses I've had.  It felt like 230 and they fell like...well 299!

16s are tough to sell for proshops and command lower prices on resale too.

On clean backends 15 may be better.

For those struggling with 8 and 9 pins from 15 pound equip.  You may be drilling your stuff for too much midlane instead of arc.  Cgs or mass bias back towards the thumb often fixes that.  (for those of you who say cg no matter).
Continue 9 pinnin away!

I've had the same experience as Gene when I moved down to 15's last year.  I honestly don't see any loss of carry after switching and I tested out the difference in weights for a long time prior to making the commitment to change.  Maybe it has more to do with styles, rev rates, etc. but I know a whole lot of people throwing 15's in my local centers.

Yeah, only lame-o, limp-wristed, 5-pin leaving nerds throw 16's these days.

#15 balls actually deflect the right way when entering the pocket thus better carry.

Umm...is there more than one way to deflect?!? NO, cause if something deflects...IT DEFLECTS!

De-flect:

To turn aside or cause to turn aside; bend or deviate

Now, what you might've meant, is that it deflects MORE off of the original path, BUT, that isn't always for the better (case in point: a lot of the asain market use 12# equipment, because the way they spin the ball)! So, if deflection is the main thing, then why aren't you using an 8# bowling ball? Because your specific shot doesn't tailor to needing less deflection! Me, it all depends on the lanes (and how I'm throwing the ball on a given day)...sometimes I leave a lot of 8-pins cause of 16# stuff (not enough deflection), but sometimes I leave a lot of 9-pins cause of 15# stuff (too much deflection)!

PS...I would like to say that the only three sour apples (5-7-10 split for all you newbies) left on our Tuesday Night Scratch league since the beginning of last season were left with: 15# LaneMasters The New Standard, 14# Columbia300 Messenger Ti Low RG, and a 15# Track Rule Delta 1...so I guess that all that "extra" deflection is what they needed...FOR A SOUR APPLE!

I think Bigwilly's last brain cell just got destroyed too, since he couldn't even realize how obvious it is that 9 was joking....

I'm sorry but this is a stupid reply.  I have used 16lb equipment for many years.  This season I bought an all new arsenal of balls and dropped down to 15lb.  I haven't noticed any change in carry.  I also bowl on long oil sport type conditions.  The above statement is rediculous.

There's still a need for 16lbs (regardless of what Bill Taylor says).  Why?  Because I and others simply throw them better.  For now, I hope I will not be forced one day to switch because the manufactorers stop making them.
