years of empty hand has taken its toll on my hands
« on: January 24, 2017, 07:36:47 PM »
Before moving to the mainland, I studied martial arts for 21 years, the last 8 was intense - 9 times a week 1.5 to 3 hours a session. I was warned by my superiors to continue to workout to avoid possible long term pain.  I didn't follow their instructions, I didn't eat right, and I'm paying for it today. 80lbs plus later, I have joint and swelling fingers and hands, mostly on my right hand. And though I don't have soreness or pain when I bowl, I do after I bowl. Plus stiffness.

I'm going to see my Dr. in two weeks for my hands and maybe help find programs with in the health system for my weight. NO NOT surgery, but AA for obese people i guess lol. Thankfully, I don't have any high cholesterol, blood sugar, etc... I don't look like I'm 256lbs at 5'6", but I am. I'm 245lbs in when this video was made. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h-c-aQ4mdHI

I'm in my mid 40's and my right hand is getting worse. My fingers have issue fitting and I resort to shims - put them in, take them out. My left hand which carries most of the weight on my set up, has pain constantly. My hand strength is going and I can't even open a jar without using a towel for leverage and grip.

I'm wearing a glove now which is helping me a lot with soreness after bowling. But, I've been thinking of using a wrist brace from keeping hand collapsing too much when I bowl more than 3 games or more than a squad. What have you guys done for arthritic hands? I want to continue to bowl and with tourneys lined up for this year, I'd like to make it to these places even if my hand has a silly (to me) looking device  8)

No, you don't look 245. I suppose most of it is muscle with all that training for so many years.

I have arthritis and tendonitis - not sure which is worse, but I'm older. I take far too much ibuprofen, which helps with both (and other problems). These days, I try to take it only before bowling.

Not sure if this will help with your hand problems but it's the only device that allowed me to bowl with tendonitis, Steel Fingers. I only used the finger device. They also have a full glove. See

I still carry them in my bag all the time, just in case.

You may have made the ultimate sacrifice for your art. I hope you will still be able to bowl. FYI Your style is very textbook and looks good at first glance.

OTC are medications I avoid, but take once in awhile. I'm going to try this joint supplement that's suppose to be all natural. I've taken some in the past that my bro-in-law had from his "eastern medicine doc" and it worked great!

Jeff, it's left over muscles that turn into fat~ lol

Those Steel fingers I've seen before. But, I'm hoping it doesn't come to that soon.  I'm going to see how things go after I see my doc who does both western and eastern medicine. But if it has to come to that, just so I can bowl, I'll put one one.

I left bowling because I had to make a choice, My father's orders. So I choose MA and left bowling and returned to bowling when I left MA lol.

Sir, it's good to know you're still bowling no matter what. Thank you for the reply and kind thoughts. But knowing some seniors with worse hand conditions - in fact, I did an exam few months ago on a 73 yr old female with RA and she's a league bowler. She's a trooper with a 178 average. My condition is just a bump in the road. I may not be able to do two finger push ups, but at least I can three finger a bowling ball. :D

If one of them is glucosamine, don't waste your money.
I'm also taking an OTC called SAME for another reason, but it turns out it has also helped some of my joints where arthritis took hold. I didn't know it was doing good in that "department, until I stopped taking it. So I resumed. For an OTC it's on the more expensive side, around 75 cents per pill.

I've also tried some "oriental" herbs, like GuSuiBu (Drynaria fortunei) and Cordyceps, among others, but, for me, they turn out to be more aimed at the body as a whole than specifically for arthritis.

I go up and down that road quite frequently myself, but not to your extent.

While they feel quite funny at first, once on, they feel almost like nothing and you wonder how they can help so much. Thankfully the tendonitis in my hand has receded and not been an issue for many years, but it did require I cut back on practice sessions I used to do. No more 8 and 10 games blocks anymore. But arthritis has started to take hold but is not yet painful in the hands .. yet.

We make our choices and then we must live with them. (There must be some old saying that makes that point but I can't think of it right now. :) )

Again good luck.

One thing you could try is the "griips Glove"....I used one for 3/4 of a season back in 2010 - 2011, and while using it you could not feel your fingers, and didn't get any swelling--ultimately FOR ME what I didn't like about the glove overrode what I did like about it, but it couldn't hurt to try it on one ball just to see if that would help.

I have that problem as well with my bowling hand.  Used the Steel Fingers for a while, it helped a little, now I can't find them and I had 2 pairs too.

The pain, sadly, I am used too, when I close my fist, my middle finger locks in the closed position until I open it. This past Monday at league, I pulled my bicep muscle in the 9th frame of the third game.  When I went up on the 10th, I couldn't even roll the ball, but I kept it on the lane at about 3 mph, LOL.

I'm almost in my mid 50's, high blood pressure, diabetic, not overweight at 5' 7" and 165#, can't read without my glasses, I got my arm taped up with KY tape (bicep still hurts but getting better), my hand is arthritic, I have tendonitis in my bowling thumb, and my left knee is getting all buss (I have to wear a brace when I bowl).  Getting old but still love to bowl.  ;D

I understand and feel your pain. The only way I can bowl practically pain free anymore is with a full wrist device. I hate my robo arm, but love the game and friends too much to walk away.

Let us know if you find anything that works for you.
