Yet Another Paypal Gripe
« on: January 24, 2006, 02:25:03 AM »
Recently sold a ball on eBay.  Total with shipping (as it was outside the US) was $125.  To receive that payment, Paypal charged almost $5.50!  Don't get me wrong, its convenient to be able to send/receive payment, but with all the "problems" and "theft" associated with paypal and their unwillingness to do anything about it (aka JeffSeniorPBA)... is it really worth it?

In 2005, I would estimate that I paid $200 to $250 in paypal transaction fees...but I guess when I take into account the money/time I would have spent driving to the UniMart for money orders, the bank to cash incoming M.O.'s, postage for sending, and time spent (both during transit and driving to the bank etc)...its probably pretty close....

They don't charge you to send money thru paypal. Only to accept payments. However, I agree that they charge way too much for their fees. I sold a gold chain on there last week for $225 and they took $7.00 out of that payment. On top of this, ebay also charged me $7.00 for sellers fees. It cost me $14.00 in fees just to sell something for $225 and then I had to pay $11 to ship. Ebay can be good when you're looking to buy something, but they rape the sellers.

I thought PayPal only charges when the buyer pays with a credit card.

To accept CC payments, you must have a Premiere or Business account.  And, if you have one of those account types, then you pay fees for all payments received (not just CC).  If you have a Personal account, then you pay no fees.  However, you also cannot accept CC payments.
