you ever notice...
« on: March 15, 2005, 11:38:09 PM »
it's hard sometimes for me to believe what people say. sometimes it seems like they don't even really know what they're saying. what i hear alot out of high performace stuff is "not good for heavy oil" but in reality what they're saying is..."in heavy oil, i can't swing the ball, and anytime i'm out of my comfort zone, the ball sucks." i just can't understand how some of the best bowlers i know refuse to play down and in if that's what the lane provides, and then blame it all on the ball. just venting i guess.

and btw, i do understand that there are a few balls that just don't move at all on heavy oil, that's not what i'm talking about, i'm talking about the high performance balls that people are afraid to move a little right with.

I know what you mean. I think too many bowlers buy a ball, stay locked with having their feet on 25 and aiming between 15-10 boards.

I'm in total agreement. But we are in the era of "help those who can help themselves". Like I have said, I have more respect for someone who plays the lane the way it is supposed to be played, which is the shot it gives you, then someone who has cement feet and doesn't fish outside their comfort zone. Great bowlers are supposed to make the entire lane their comfort zone.

my point exactly. and another thing that drives me nuts...for instance, a few weeks ago i shot 700 even with a 290 in there, and someone had the "balls" to tell me that the lanes were "unplayable" because they were so dry. in reality, i was about 3 boards right of normal. how is someone going to say that the lanes were unplayable when there was 4-5 700's surrounding them? crazy people. it's always the lanes, or the equipment, or they stuck, or slid, or the machine scratched their ball so it rolled different. i say if you don't like it...don't bowl! lol.

I love when I read that a guy plays between this board or that board. How the hell do you know where to bowl unless you have thrown a few balls. Now I understand that most house shots stay the same during the year, but I can bowl in one house and throw the most hooking ball in my arsenal off of my ankle at five and in another house I throw the most shined up thing I own through nineteen out to ten. If you can't change with the shot, you are missing the most important part of this game. The dinosaurs could not adapt and look where it got them!!!!

It is easy to play high games when ball and lane condition match. But many bowlers I know think they can play well, but they always stay in the same house with an easy lane dressing (house shot). When lanes braek down, it is always the service crew's fault that they do not score with their game and their high performance balls.

But in reality, they are completely unable to adapt their game, make changes in line, release or speed. Therefore I also underline, that it is always the player who cannot paly well. Equipment may give you limitations, but when it is time to take on the pocket directly, you should recognize this and play accordingly.

Interesting point. Last year in the league (mixed) I enjoy the most, we had a team that spent 10-15 minutes "eyeing" the lanes. pointing out a speck so many boards out, so far down. Our team beat the socks off them, (for second place) and the excuse they had was...one lane had more oil on it than the other and their balls required more oil than was on the lanes. PLEASE !! Our team wasn't that much better than they were, we just adjusted to what the lanes were giving us. Shoot, all totaled we couldn't beat many teams, but we do move, adjust, shoot inside, whatever the lanes are for that evening, we try to use. We're not 10-15 board swingers, we see what is working and try to go from there.
I'm not knocking the 'big swingers', just watching posts, I see a lot of folks always blame the ball (which may or may not be the right ball for the conditions) but never take the blame for a bad night or a bad shot.
In a way, I also blame the ball companies, they state..This ball can clear the deck..or most hook in any ball..a must have.
I am by no way near a pro level, but as I learn more and more, I think a lot of the reasons people get frustrated with the game or ball, it's because they do get stuck in one style, stance, delivery and never make the changes that the conditions are set for that time frame.

I'm done.

my 2 cents are up

I've learned to take my high performance equipment and play based on what the lane conditions dictate plus what I'm capable of doing. If I have to throw it slower, up the back and down the 5 board to score, that's what I do. If I have to play 20 to 10, that's what I do. I don't expect to be able to swing the ball to gutter to gutter with a high performance ball. A lot of times on heavy oil, straighter and more direct is greater, and that's usually my best way of attacking the lanes.
