Your 12th ball for your first Perfecto
« on: September 25, 2004, 09:36:37 AM »
Hi All! I was just wondering if you remembered how you threw your
12th ball for your first 300 game?  Were you nervous, did you throw
it over your mark, did you look up at the people watching you etc...
Just curious.  Thanks.

My first was back in the late 70's, was bowing in a league with Don Carter and was bowling against his son Jimmy Carter this night at Don Carters All Star Lanes, Kendall Drive Miami Florida. This house is a 72 lane center, split 36 on two side. I remember the entire house gathering as I got up in the tenth. I looked over the crowd and got so nervous. I looked up at scorers and our lane was telecasted on all the overheads in the house. I reracked more to have more time to relax and made a great shot... all 10 in the pit. Crowd roared. More people running over to watch. Crowd went silent as I stepped up on the approach... and threw an identical shot. All 10 in the pit. I reracked twice in the 12th... I was to fricken shaking to walk to the foul line. Must have been 200 people behind me and deadly silent. I remember standing on the approach and my legs were physically shaking and knees were knocking. Hand was shaking... but despite how nervous I was I was more excited. I knew I was gonna do it. No doubt in my mind. I hit my target at the arrows but missed right at my break point and it came back like a truck and ripped the rack, the five pin shot toward the 7pin. Crowd went crazy (was using a columbia yellow dot). People ran up onto the approach... met me half way back... I must have shaken 100 peoples hands congratualting me. After the crowd subsided Jimmy Carter comes up to me and asks me, how many that made... I said it was my first and he said, "that is incrediable, you looked so composed and cool, I thought for sure that was your 10th or more" and he offered to buy me a drink in congratulations and I said "sorry I am underage".. I was 17. I have had many since then over the 25+ years since and with each one, the reaction of the crowd and sense of personal satisfaction continues to lessen. 300's arent what they used to be and it is ashame for the sport.

i've never thrown one for real, but threw one in practice and didnt even realize it untill the game was done and someone next to me told me i shot it (i dont watch the scoreboard when i practice). It's kind of sad that when someone throws one in league, only half the people realize what is going on and only the next 4 lanes over stop bowling usually. When someone throws one, no one thinks of it as that much out of the ordinary. so far this year we have had 2 300's, 2 299, 1 298, and 1 297. keep in mind this is a junior league.

nice spam post Kid.

I remember mine. it happened in a time long ago and far away when maybe 1 or at most 2 would be shot in the house. some houses have never had a 300.

I had witnessed many chokes on the first ball in the tenth so I was determined to throw the best ball all night. I started out playing a small swing crossing  12 out  to maybe 9 at the break . I was blowing up the rack. every ball flush in the pocket.

The lanes were giving up room for me so the first 3 or 4 were true on course. This was at at time when I was acurate and had some hand. so each ball crept out a little more and it still came back. so I had about 4 boards at the arrow.

I had a teammate telling me I was going to shoot a 3 since the forth. that did not rattle me much, because I had the opportunity to bowl with many good bowlers. in fact the guy I bowled with already had a dozen. as we chatted he told me how coming off a double shift he shot a 300 while dozing off between frames.

so the 10th comes along. I tighten up my line back to where I started I blew up the rack and the next frame as well.

this was a big league and it was the last game and we were one of the last team still bowling. so I go to get my ball and stand on the approach and I can hear the pins cycling in the back. 120 or more people were all watching me.

I think the dead silence was more of a distraction that me being nervous. I let it rip. I miss my mark by 4 boards left. it come screaming back and hits at an angle that today ball do with ease but back then it was sharp enough and blew right through the deck and the 7 and 10 fell inward and back. it was the funkiest strike I had seen. probably because I was nervous.

my ball?

a Blue Pearl hammer. drilled label axis( back then the pins were in the label) my span was about 5" stretched . thumb slug and grips (lifts). my thumb 3/4 away and 3/8 left. my fingers were pitch 1/4 in. did I ever get revs.

of course shortly after that I tore the ligaments in the back of my had from such a extreme grip.

so far I am 1 for 1 when facing a 12trh strike.

There's a pretty good story to mine.  I was bowling a Sunday sweeper tournament where we bowled 3 games and then the top 1/3 bowled another 3 games, then stepladder finals.  I made the cut but my ball (black u-dot) was starting to move too much so I put it in the Luster King.  It came out glowing shiny and I thought I was in trouble because I over did it.  Then, through some screw up in scheduling we had to move to the other end of the house for the next round, because they had ANOTHER tournament scheduled on the lanes where we were bowling.  They had to shove some open bowlers around to make room for us.  It turn out lanes where we now had to bowl might not have even been oiled yet because they hooked WAY more and pretty much everyone struggled EXCEPT ME!  I had an unbelievable shot with my now shiny U-Dot.  I start off spare, strike, spare, 8-10 split and then reel off the next 23 strikes in a row! Across three pair of lanes, too. I was at 17 in a row when I got up in the tenth frame.  As I got up for the first shot the guy working behind the counter goes running to the back to fix some problem just as I start my delivery.  I step back and wait for him to come back.  He doesn't, so I finally throw the first one and it's dead flush. I get up for the next shot and just as I start my delivery, here he comes, running out from the back!  Again I reset myself and throw the next one a little wide but I swished out the 5-7.  So now it's the twelve shot and guess who decides he needs to run to the back again?  That sawed-off little runt from behind the counter!  Now I yell out "that little jerk is doing it on purpose!" and he was, too.  He was one of those little guys who is pissed at the world because he's short. He always seemed to have a chip on his shoulder. He used to wear shoes with really thick soles so he'd look taller.  If he could have screwed up my perfect game it would have somehow made him feel good about himself.  Anyway, now I'm sure he is standing back there looking out the peep hole waiting for me to start my approach so he can run out again.  So I wait and wait.  Finally he comes back.  Probably knew I was going to wait as long as it took and he wanted to witness me choking firsthand.  Well he didn't get what he wanted because I buried the twelve one in the pocket.  I wasn't nervous on the last shot, just determined.  It case anyone thinks it was maybe all just coincidence and the guy wasn't really trying to wreck my game, consider this.  THEY HAVE PINCHASERS! Since when does the guy behind the counter have to run to the back?  I never heard or saw any problems with any of the lanes either and neither did anyone else. Plus everyone around me stopped bowling to watch!  So I come to find out that the tournament is not sanctioned so it doesn't count anyway.  Several years later I threw my first sanctioned 300 and that game has kind of a crazy story too, but I'll share that another time.
By the way, I don't have anything against short people.  My wife is 4-11.  This guy was just a jerk.

My first 300 came on my second attempt.  The first attempt I pulled the ball and punched one through the face for a 7 count.  On the 300, my 2nd and 4th frames weren't solid, but I then made the proper adjustment.  From the 5th frame on, every ball was solid.  I was very nervous, but managed to bury every ball.  It was really cool, because I was the anchor bowler on the first shift, and the scratch classic league was waiting on us.  All of the best bowlers in town got to witness my 300.

Hey,

This is a very interesting topic, just today I had front eight and was going into the nineth my legs were shaking and i had everyone in my saturday league watching me. I washed my ball and dried my hand, and then... threw it the release was perfect i felt it in my hand. Everyone stood to their feet screaming and i left the seven. See im a lefty and hate it when that happens, but what can i say...

All 12 flush.  I had a 298 before and made an adjustment on it and went high.  On the 300 didn't do anything except throw it the same way.  No nerves at all.

Wow it's been over 15 years. Time flies.
Yes I was very very nervous starting the 10th frame. The 10th ball was high and tripped the 4-7 off the wall.
The last two were just dead flush. I was more nervous on the 11th one than the twelfth ball.
I thought then it was very cool to get down to one more shot to try to do something I never imagined I could or would ever do.
I never even looked artound at all to see who was watching. All I knew for sure was the two pairs to either side of us had stopped bowling and I told them to please keep bowling.
One guy to the right of us did God bless him.
With a Gold Angle.

It is sad that now honor scores are so common place in most centers that it's a ho hum event. It was more fun when there were maybe 2 or 3 the entire year in a large house that had leagues filling almost everey week night with a double shift of Leagues, and maybe someone shot 800 but some years no one did.
Even so there is still nothing like the feeling of getting up in the 10th with the front 9 from a personal viewpoint.

First one was tough. Front 9 were all packed, first in the 10th was a little light in he swish zone, 11th the 7 pin barely fell (lefty), came back most of the league was done and watching, looked at my buddy, told him to go get me a shot, laughed, got on the approach and tried not to think about it, threw it, pulled it by 3 boards and threw it about 20 mph (compared to about 16.5 all night) and absolutely crushed the hole. Didnt mean to throw it like that, but I did and it worked. Got plenty drunk that night. 2nd one was a lot easier, got a break in the 9th and flushed the other 11. It was a summer league so I really wasnt nervous (just having fun) and got up and 11 perfect shots and got one huge break (9th frame came in light and carried the bucket).

Brings back memories.  Been about 10 years ago.  Got up on the approach in the 10th and everyone backed off except for a bowler on my right.  He was new to bowling and didn't realize what was going on.  Anyway I waited for him for number 10 and 11.  My ball in the 11th was dead solid (all the other strikes were solid, but the one in the 11th was almost perfect). Got up for my last ball and everything was a blur.  Again a bowler to my right was getting his ball so I waited.  I believe this kept me from rushing my shot.  Said to myself, just take a deep breath and count to 4.  My legs seemed to be made out of rubber bands but hit my mark as time seemed to slow down.  Result was 10 in the pit.  By the was, this was the only 300 in the house for the entire year.
