Your best practice session
« on: July 17, 2004, 02:54:47 AM »
What would you say was one of your more memorable practice sessions you've had- either with a coach or without? For me it would be the time that I had 2 hours with my college coach's son (a regional bowler from New Jersey at the time) and he was able to really work on my release and my ball speed to improve my game immensely. When I went back to my regular league 2 hours later I shot my first 700 series as a result.

I also had a good practice session today- learning to look at transitioning lane conditions. I would bowl one game with my Eraser Pearl Particle and then switch to a more arcing ball and go from there. I've been having trouble keeping up the consistency in games 1 to 2 during the summer, so maybe a ball switch is necessary instead of fighting what the lanes are doing during transitioning.

Would love to hear practice tales and what happened as a result in league/ tournament competition.

Matt

My best session came shortly after New Year's day when I went practicing with a friend at the local establishment. He got talking about a tweener-type we had seen at a tournament the previous week and commented on that persons arm/elbow positioning throughout their swing and release and how their elbow was always turned in towards their body.

At the time I was a stroker type with a bad habit of chicken winging the ball, so when he said "I wish I could turn my arm that way", I thought the same thing, then realized that I was actually flexible enough to do so. Next thing you know I am steering ball after ball into the pocket with three times as many revs as before (and more importantly making my friend somewhat jealous! ).

Ever since then my accuracy has gone up and my revs have even increased a slight bit more than the initial increase as well. So in that one session I fixed my chicken winged swing, developed a more powerful release, and improved my accuracy.

I am looking forward to bowling the next season with my new style to see what I am now capable of.

Back in 1980 when I was 20, I strung 46 strikes in a row, before leaving a 10 then stringing another 22. So I had 68 of 69 before I tired. I had a crowd watching and was joking around the whole time.

I'd say when I shot my first 600 series, even though it wasnt sanctioned I was really psyched. It was also the first time I ever shot 3 200+ games in a row. Either that, or when I was getting help from a collegian bowler, that stayed after a big college tourney to help the kids out. (finally learned to keep my arm out straight instead of crossing over) IDK why, I just remember it clearly.

Funny, all my best series and bowling is in practice. My joke is that I am the best practice bowler of all times. All of my 800's are in practice, never done it in league. I have two 300's in league, probably a couple dozen in practce, heck had three the same week practicing last year and think I barely broke 600 that week in league. Seems my biggest string was like 27 or 28, last 8 or 9, 300 and then front 6 or 7. Of course in practice, league no where close. Outside of the scoring issue, I always look for practice to help perfect something. In the last year or so, that has not happened. I have been in a slump that involves both the practice and competitive aspects of the game. I keep going back to the lanes and trying to find that natural swing and timing. When it clicks, I just hope it stays for a while.

The first time I met Ron Clifton during the first get together at his center.  He had a group of us doing a few practice drills to see what we could do.  After completing those, he took us aside one on one.  After seeing a heavily muscled armswing on tape, he got me to change my starting position and loosen up.  I learned lots of little tricks and tips that day.  He even had me playing the twig halfway decent.  I shot a few honor scores within a few months of that day.  My average is 5-10 pins higher and I feel more confident on any lane condition.  I know everyone who came on that trip improved their game afterwards.  I'm still waiting on the dividends from the second trip.

DID SOMEBODY SAY PRACTICE?!?!  I was the ULTIMATE practice scores poster back in the day.  Let's see, I was pot bowling the boss at the shop about a year and a half ago and shot 803 at him.  Then there was the week I shot 297-805 cyberbowling with buddies one night.  Again, potbowling.  Then I went out trying to shoot 300 the next night and did.  Ahh the memories . .

Ahhh, the practice score whor... returns!  I wouldn't call pot or cosmic bowling practice, but those scores are definitely memorable!

Of course it's practice!  Going head to head with somebody when there's money on the line, just like league.  Points are worth like 2-something per . .
