Your opinions on reading this common condition
« on: November 13, 2003, 05:37:24 PM »
I would appreciate hearing from some of the guys who consider themselves particularly talented at reading lanes. Please tell me your style and the choice you would make in the following situation...

Being a tweener, I like to start out the night swinging the ball to the track.
Assuming you have been scoring well, when the track area breaks down and a quality shot goes through the nose is it better to

1) Change equipment and keep playing the same shot
2) Increase ball speed
3) Move the feet deeper and keep rolling the shot out to the track
4) Move the feet AND eyes deeper inside.
5) Other option - please explain

What if a quality shot rolls so early it goes brooklyn? Does this change the choice you would make?

For a typical house shot.

My choice is almost always 4.

If I move only my feet generally the shot will either still go high as it gets in the dry quicker or the ball uses too much energy. I generally will move 3 with my feet and 2 at my target.

If the shot rolls early (in the heads) then 4 is even a stronger choice as you need to find more oil.

As a tweener who likes to play the track, I've been struggling with this, and I typically try #3 until it stops working, and then I try #4.  I tend to have trouble making the ball recover and hit the pocket when I move my feet and target left, so a very experienced bowler at my lanes suggested that when the scenario you described happens, also change to a stronger ball.  So for me, I usually start out with a solid reactive, and then when the track is gone, I move left with my target and feet and switch to a heavy load particle, so a combination of #4 and #1.  Maybe just another idea to practice and see if it works for you.

since you are a tweener, moving the eyes and feet might get you into the oil to much and you'll be leaving soft 10's. increasing ball speed is not the easiest thing to do and stay in time. what i usually do is either, 1. change my hand to a little weaker position throwing the same ball and line, or 2. got to a weaker surface drilling and throw the same line.

17 mph avg speed, 280 avg rev rate.

at one of the houses i bowl at, they use a rather slick and very very very VERY clean surface (They strip in the AM, and again in the afternoon... and the center is kept pretty consistently cool). The vast majority of the bowlers are elderly, and are using plastic balls... rolling it down the middle. This creates dry heads between 12 to 12 or so, and carrydown is an issue.

Equipment of choice for me would be a ball with a high-rg drilling, but with quite a lot of cover on it (particle ball w/ a 6x4 drill). I play way outside and make sure that I come up behind the ball for forward roll. I will then break down a spot on the outside part of the lane and then just throw it faster and/or change axis tilt to delay hook as breakdown occurs.

As for a fresh house wall I usually play the track area. I will first try to throw it a bit faster when a dry tube starts to form there, but if that doesn't work, I'll have to move left and bounce it off of the dry spot I was playing earlier. That might involve some speed and axis tilt adjusting, but that's what i'd normally do.

Me thinks that like 'Bones said there are several ways to skin a cat. Your house is unique as well as any other you bowl in. Each has it's own lock and you need a big key ring. Another suggestion to go along with the others here is to bring your index finger in almost even with the middle finger as that will usually give me 2 boards or so less. Also pushing the pinkie out is good for a couple of boards. As well as tucking the pinky gives me about 2-3 extra boards of hook if neeed. All of these allow me to buy some time before I need to move without changing my hand position, feet, or target. One house I bowl in doesn't allow these moves as the first shot that you toss comes up high....I have to make a jump to the left, usually around 5:3 to 5:5. Trying to adjust using the same area will result in 160 games.

Don't be afraid to try something before something bad happens, as at least you will be moving with confidence instead of starting your search on a couple of splits.....makes a big difference.
