Your Reason for Bowling
« on: November 05, 2009, 02:07:12 PM »
I am new here. I have lurked for a while. I am just curious as to your bowling motives.

Me. I bowl for fun and fellowship. I like to win, but as I get older that is less likely nowadays. I enjoy the exercise and the challenge. I enjoy talking with friends in the classic league about sports and such. I no longer compete in tournaments, but I still love the game and anyone who asks about the game I am more than happy to share information about our sport which is very misunderstood by most people. Once at work I was talking with a guy and he had no idea what a lane condition was.

I actually enjoy watching the young guns shoot 750 every week when 570 is a good night for me. If I can maintain 190, I am happy. There are a lot of SASBA guys in their late fifties and early sixties averaging 220 and that is fun to watch the older guys still shoot high especially when they bowl the team of young guns.

We have a great sport, but I don't like the party mixed leagues. Too much alcohol for me to be around. Those days are over for me! That was the late 1970's and early 1980's for me!

Primarily it is a spare time hobby. Period.

The fact that I took up bowling as a hobby a couple of years ago started with simple open bowling and the idea (together with a friend) to have personal balls drilled, since we would spend evenings out with friends.

From there, I found bowling to be both attractive for my life circumstances (work at an advertising agency, often beyond space and time...) and interests and physical capabilities. It is a multi-faceted occupation, with executional, technical and mental aspects. And: you can do it on your own, as well as joining leagues to have team fun and enter competitions.

Believe it not, my girlfriend got me into it. One night we were just sitting around and she suggested we go bowling....I was 42 at the time and haven't bowled since i was 20 and that was ugly.
NOW I'm totally hooked and I love it, I've been doing it since March bowl in two leagues and average 180/205. Since I've started I've purchased at least 12 bowls (junkie) and the best part of it is my girlfriend loves it too.

Bowling is my stress relief, something that allows me to get away from my job and just enjoy myself.  I am competitive and like to win but have mellowed enough with age to not get wound up when we lose.

I can't imagine not bowling.  I got back into bowling when I was in the Air Force in Germany, circa 1970's, and never looked back.

I bowl and am involved in bowling for the fun of it. What do I like about it?

The people I meet
The people I can help enjoy bowling more
The atmosphere of the competition, even when it's not too serious
Watching the people who get too serious and listening to them b1tch about the lane conditions (even when their average is 120 and they roll a ball with a conventional grip)
Simply put, I am fanatic about the sport and don't see any lessening of my enthusiasm about the sport in the future.

I'm relatively good at it, I enjoy the competition and I like to win. Even though I'm not always good at it and I don't always win.

I started bowling thanks to my dad and grandfather.  Dad bowled on tour for a few years in the 50s and 60s, and the two of them owned  the first pro shop in DC.  I bowl now, because I enjoy the comraderie and competition.

I love to bowl that is my main reason for bowling, I also like making extra cash in tourneys every once in awhile.

I also like the satisfaction of destroying some cocky 20 years old ego when beat him call me a jerk but that is a good feeling.
