Your thoughts on PBA Experience so far...
« on: August 15, 2007, 04:49:44 AM »
Since there is a lot of doom and gloom about the death of bowling on here lately, I was wondering what people on here thought of the PBA Experience leagues now that it has been out for a spring and a summer.

I have had more fun playing this type of league and I notice other people having more fun in this league also.  Everyone is more involved and people trade strategies and try to help each other out.  The patterns are tricky but you can definitely shoot some good scores on them and I think that's what keeps people coming back for more.

I haven't seen a lot of talk on here about these leagues lately and I was wondering what other people thought going into the fall.

I hope to find a winter PBA experience. I would rather shoot on these patterns anyday that the B.S. house walls.

Amen.

I haven't exactly bowled well, but I've felt it's been a FAIR average. The PBA shots have really opened my eyes on some flaws with my game, so I've been working hard on it.
I'm not satisfied with my scores or my performance, but I am satisfied with my learning.

Has anyone tried bowling on a house shot yet - to get ready for winter? I bowled a house shot tournament a couple of weeks ago. All around me were shooting lights out. I could hit the pocket, but when transition hit, I couldn't figure out how to move. It was like relearning the game ... again...

I'm not in a league but one center 40 mins away offers PBA Exp. patterns every Tues., $10 for 2 hours. Would you believe last week 4 people showed up? I think the most I've seen was 12-14 people the 2nd night.

My experience has been a good one. I went in with only knowing what I read on the net expecting the patterns to be unplayable and my 210-220 average to drop drastically. In the end the scores did drop but this is my first taste of something other than a house shot. Even so and with a few poor scores I'm still averaging mid to high 190s and I fully expect to be over 200 again as this was my first pass on the patterns and they are starting over. The error of margin is much smaller and I notice I had to slow my ball speed down. Spares are critical, it basically forces you to make quality shots and that's where the challenge and fun comes into play for me.

The sad part is this practice is to get people ready for a league that was to follow directly after. With such a weak following due to most bowlers being in love with inflated scores it doesn't look like it'll get off the ground. If I have the chance I'll take a PBA Exp League over a THS any day of the week.

mighty mynx, i'm sorry to say, a heavily sanded ball is not always the wrong ball to use of the cheetah pattern. on synthetic lanes, especially the brunswick proanvilane synthetic lanes, a heavily sanded reactive or particle ball is sometimes the only way to go. although the pattern is "only" 35' in length it has the most oil by volume and carrydown occurs quickly. the two pba regionals i bowled on brunswick synthetic lanes used the cheetah pattern and they played very slick----i used my 220 grit mammoth straight down the 2-3 board for 4 games or so before they opened up a little. even then, my 1,000 grit awesome finish was the ball of choice.

i'm not going to bowl a pba experience league until i can find one at a house with synthetic lanes and a modern lane machine. the houses in our association have 40 year old wood lanes and lane machines from the early 1990's. this combo leaves a shot that's nothing like what i'm seeing at regional tournaments. the pba experience is a great idea but the lane topography is the dominant factor.

I bowled one in the Spring and while I enjoyed it, it was also extremely frustrating.  The format was to bowl on the same pattern as the pros for the week.  That meant a different pattern each week and by the time we repeated a pattern it was hard to remember what strategy to use.

The one they ran in the summer had 3 weeks on each pattern.  I didn't bowl since I was already signed up for 3 leagues and had trips planned that would mean missing too many weeks.  I think this fall/winter it is going to be run more like the summer.  I look forward to joining, if there is room.

I also did the three week on a pattern format.  I think it gives you a kind of crash course first week and then you get to look forward to trying new strategies the next couple of weeks.  By the end of the third, you have have tried a lot of stuff and next time the pattern comes around you won't be back at square one again.

You know, I never even tried a sanded reactive on the Cheetah (on pro anvilane) and I wonder if that was the problem.

Mine has been great One of the local houses has been doing a Sport or PBA League for quite awhile so I have 4 seasons worth under my belt and I love it. Once you get the grasp of it I think it is much more fun than just bowling in a league!

I think this could bring back the competitive nature of the Sport but in the process of implementing a more Sport oriented set up we might lose alot of younger and inexperienced bowlers because it is '' to tough''

I think it all depends...  Lately I seem to notice the older people complaining more.  Some of the younger people I am noticing seem to have the best attitudes about it.

I also think this will ultimately lose more bowlers in the long run.  Bowlers bowl league to have fun and shoot high scores.  If you aren't in a center where there are a lot of tournament bowlers, chances are there won't ever be a PBA league or "sport" league because the proprietor does not want to lose bowlers.  If you have averaged 220 plus for several years and all of a sudden average 190, are you going to want to come back?  I doubt it.

Some bowlers will not enjoy it and quit.  While others enjoy the challenge.  You have to check your ego at the door, and realize that everyone will struggle most of the time, so why should you be exempt?

I have had many good games followed by a not-so-good game.  Our league switches to a different pair with different opponents each game, so what worked in the 10th frame on one pair, may or may not work in the first frame on the very next game, due to the oil being moved around by other bowlers who played a different line.

Eventually the most accomplished league bowlers want to compare their skills against the PBA pros, and this is a good start.  It's a humbling experience, but when put into perspective, it can be lots of fun.

mighty mynx hit it right on the head about bowling on guardian. i bowled a regional back in april that used the cheetah pattern on wood lanes with 22' of guardian. particle balls were not only unnecessary but they were counterproductive-----they burned up too quickly. equipment changes went to weaker stuff as the day went on. i know bowling regionals is not cheap but if you really want to test your skills on the cheetah pattern or any other pba pattern you owe it to yourself to try it. it is an ego check and a reality check. you have to make good shots or else.

Our Score Book has been really helpful with the PBA Experience league.

We've been doing the rotating patterns as well, and I can go back to what I learned 5 weeks ago by using the book.

mumzie,
The "Click Here" link (As in "Click Here to see how to use the book!") is broken...

BTW, My first night of bowling back on a house shot was this past Tuesday night and I struggled my first two games due to the fact that on the PBA shots, I had softened my speed and release.  The Tuesday night house shot is on dry, wood lanes and I left 10 wide open splits during the first two games.  In my last game I increased the speed of the ball and did a bit better...

I hear the youngsters around here complain about it a little more, They have had a nice simple wall to bowl on for so long then they try PBA Patterns and average maybe 150. Alot of those dudes are pretty arrogant cocky if they were as good as they think they would be on tour.
