Your thoughts on PBA Experience so far...
« on: August 15, 2007, 04:49:44 AM »
Since there is a lot of doom and gloom about the death of bowling on here lately, I was wondering what people on here thought of the PBA Experience leagues now that it has been out for a spring and a summer.

I have had more fun playing this type of league and I notice other people having more fun in this league also.  Everyone is more involved and people trade strategies and try to help each other out.  The patterns are tricky but you can definitely shoot some good scores on them and I think that's what keeps people coming back for more.

I haven't seen a lot of talk on here about these leagues lately and I was wondering what other people thought going into the fall.

Considering this is my first chance at a PBA Experience league (in the fall my local house runs it second shift, can't make it due to working an hour from that center third shift), I love it. The previous two seasons I bowled the sport shot league in this same house (Merrimack, NH), and I think the patterns play tougher than house shots but fair. You have to think while bowling, transitions are key and depending on the bowling traffic they can break down differently every time. I've learned that I need to work on my game more for the shorter patterns like Cheetah and Viper, and love the longer Scorpion and Shark patterns.

I'm believing this will help me in the long run with my tournament schedule, as I rarely see house patterns at the tournaments I bowl during the year.

I definitely agree with what you said there.

I absolutely love bowling in a PBA Experience league.

1)  If I shoot a 210 or 220, I feel like I've actually accomplished something.  Shooting a 230 or 240 is a big deal.  And if I shoot a 250 or higher, that is really special!
2)  It has definately made me a better bowler because it requires such accuracy.  I have had to refine my technique and change my release.  Now my accuracy is infinitely better than it was at the start of the summer, and I'm actually getting more revs than before just because my release is cleaner.
3)  It's forced me to finally learn more about different ball surfaces, etc. and how it affects my game.
4)  I just enjoy actually being on a variety of patterns, especially the differences in length
5)  It's nice to actually have consistent oil patterns with fresh backends for a change!!  You don't hit random dry boards or oil patches nearly as often as you do on lanes that haven't been thoroughly stripped and reoiled in awhile.

I really enjoyed my PBA experience leagues.  The improvements in my game from this summer, should add up to 10+ pins in average this fall!

Just this past summer was my first chance at bowling on the 5 pba shots, and I found a few of them a bit challenging. The cheetah I could not match up, because of joining the league late, the scorpian I did a little better, but the shark pattern, I bowled some pretty good scores, some 220's and two score over 240!! But I am bowlingin the winter league here at my local house and the manager is doing the 5 pba shot again, so pretty excited!!

The best part of me bowling a summer PBA experience league was seeing the house hack as some on here call them bowl. This young man of around 29 averaged 239 during our THS league this past year. He had at least 4-5 300's and at least 4-5 800's with one being 835.

He averaged 193 for the 12 week PBA league and I know for a fact had one set of 467 for 3 games. We start regular league tomorrow night and it will be on a new shot this year. I don't have anything against someone who can bowl and average 240 plus, but don't walk and act like your stuff don't stink when you cant shoot 500 in league.

I forgot to add, the house kept the total average for the house during this league and it was a whopping, 162.

Around here, the PBA shots that the houses are putting down dont play the same from one place to the next. Mostly due to the machines and lane surface. And they play much easier than the same shot laid down at hte regionals. So the PBA leagues are kinda giving people a false sense of accomplishment.

It is still a move in the right direction I think...  You have the lane surface you have and the machine that you have right?

I beleive so. At least houses are doing something different. And they are seeing that people are enjoying bowling on something thats not so easy that Stevie Wonder can shoot 300 on.

One thing that hasn't been mentioned yet is that since the scoring pace is lower, you can actually hang out in the pocket and make your spares and have a really good chance of winning.

I like the spare, consistency, and accuracy emphasis.  I don't understand why everyone wouldn't be into this.  If you bowl a good game you have a higher chance of winning.

I have enjoyed it very much. Our 15 week summer league did 3 weeks on each of the 5 patterns. I didn't excel on any one pattern, in fact sometimes left the center feeling like I had been in a fight.
Matching up surfaces is really important, and just trying to repeat shots on patterns which demand accuracy have made me appreciate the PBA pros who do well on these shots.

If by having PBA or Sport bowling leagues with tougher shots, regardless of how they play, forces bowlers to rely on quality shot making and accuracy, Then I'm all for it.

I also think that all junior bowlers should be bowling on these tougher shots instead of on house conditions. It will teach them things that will make them better bowlers.

I really enjoyed my 10 week experience league, we bowled on each pattern 2 weeks in a row, a very eye opening experience to say the least.  It has helped me quite a bit to understand what the pros go through every week.  If a house near me does a winter league, I'll definitely take part again.

The only problem I have is the USBC has something growing (PBA EXPERIENCE LEAGUES)....and what do they do? RAISE SANCTION FEES! The Sport upgrade last season was $9, this year it is $15. This is on top of the normal usbc sanction fee.
