youth move to adult: average effected?
« on: September 18, 2006, 02:30:14 PM »
How exactly does a youth average effect a person when they make the move to adult? I know that each league is individual, and I know how the leagues I'm bowling in work, but I'm wondering for tournament purposes if they will go back and look at my youth average to figure out what division I'm in tournaments. I'm for sure going to average lower this year, as I'm bowling in a much tougher house (even though last years wasn't that high as a second shift youth league), so I'm hoping that I can just get my 21 games in and use that as my average for entering capped tournaments.

i was able to bowl in the 205 and under division for the mega buck tournaments cause of bowling in a travel league. they used the past 2 seasons of my youth. they didnt have a problem until they saw me bowl and re-rated me into the higher division cause they said i was 'too good' for the 205 average.

Ah, ok, thats not good because thats what I thought would happen (use my youth average). I think it would only be 212, but that still kinda sucks as I'm going to  be around 205 this season. Looking at tournaments, most say they do go back and look at youth averages.

For me, there wasn't much of a drop off.  A pin or two, but my two different averages were closer than my two in youth were.  I was used to bowling on tougher conditions at tournaments, and the carrydown at one of our houses happened pretty quickly, so it prepared me for the changes.  That's one of the biggest differences, going from a 3 or 4 man youth team (don't think I've ever heard of a 5 man youth league) to 5 man leagues.  Track burn and carrydown become a bigger issue, especially on a league with better bowlers who hit what they're aiming at a higher percentage of the time.  Picking up spares is very important.  Also, if you can move up and be humble, that will go pretty far.  Got a buddy that just moved up, and he's good, but really cocky.  He doesn't quite get the concept of drastic lane changes and playing angles to carry.  He's used to a fresh shot that doesn't change all day and spraying pins around.  He's been leaving a lot of flat 10's so far and can't figure out why.  Be humble and pay a LOT of attention to the better bowlers.  You'd be amazed how easy it is to score on a lane that's been torn up if you're playing the right angles.

This is a silly response, but it is the truth. The hardest thing about moving to an adult league, is that, well...if your moving up because you are becoming an adult(over 18), usually your responsibilities increase in your regular life, which directly effects your bowling. I don't think it has anything to do with adult leagues, just the act of becoming an adult and dealing with everyday responibilities that will effect your bowling.

I wasn't exactly concerned about the drop off in average, I'm bowling in a much tougher house this year and am fully expecting a drop off, even with the increased practice I'm going to have. Just wanted to know how this drop off will effect me (or is it affect?).

Yes, that is why I am into mathematics and not english...
