Zero Score For Not Bowling?
« on: October 19, 2003, 06:56:11 PM »
Hi guys and gals,

I need your opinions on the application of rule 108b, "Failure to Complete Game Without Cause".  My question is, does this apply when a bowler plays the first two games, bowls poorly, then goes blind in the last game?

The 2nd place team is bowling the 4th place team.  Both anchor bowlers are bowling like crap, 40+ pins below average.  The 4th place team takes the first two games.

Prior to the start of the last game, the anchor bowler from 2nd place team says he didn't feel well earlier in the day, and shouldn't have come tonight; takes himself out of the game, puts in his blind score, and sits down at the table behind the settee.  Stays there for the whole game, leaves with his buddies after bowling is done.

Before the game begins, the 4th place team files a protest with the league president, says the other team is trying to gain an unfair advantage because this guy is bowling like crap, so he knows that his blind will be a higher score than what he would bowl.

2nd place team wins the last game by 3 pins.  4th place team is really pissed!

Whaddya say?  Foul or no foul?  If foul, what's the penalty?  Does he really get a zero score for the game?

I don't have a rule book in front of me, but it sounds like rule 108b doesn't apply, because he never started the game.

I'm not sure of a rule that states he can't quit for whatever reason and not bowl the last game. He did give a reason, whether it's true or not, we'll never know for sure.

I'd say you're lucky that he showed up and bowled the first 2 games..!! =:^D

I've seen a lot worse and a lot better reason for filing a protest and the ABC did not honor the protest (a 225 bowler in perfect health and bowling well threew 2 gutter balls in the 10th frame to allow a friend to win a match point.). If he says he's sick, then he's sick, whether it's the first ball of the 1st game or the 10th ball of the 3rd game.
