what does compound mean when referred to the coverstock of this ball and what do u tell a pro shop if u want to go back to the box cover,mine is presently sanded to 400 and it doesn't work,it was too aggressive for what i wanted it for when i polished it so i sanded it thinking i could use it for heavier oil ,but i cant

compund is the equivalent of a 100 grit polish.

It comes from the IDEA of automotive "polishing compund". Bowling has a few different "compunds" whose main purpose is to help drillers finish off the plugs in a ball in one step: they smooth out the sanding lines from 400-500 grit (which the driller uses, after routing off the plug material) and then applies a light polish, which is the equivalent of about 1000 grit.

Ultimate's Quick Kut and Polish and Track's Clean and Sheen do these tasks in one step.
