WMB rolling over thumbhole
« on: December 17, 2005, 10:48:20 AM »
I got this ball used. I plugged the fingerhole grips and had the fingerholes drilled into the ball and kept the thumbhole. It was an insert insted of a slug. It was a tad big but using some tape and shoving some cardboard behind it worked even though it wasn't the most comfortable grip.

The MB is left of the thumbhole and the ring finger is next to the pin. When it works out right, this ball has a killer roll. The track is small and it is close to the thumbhole. On every other aysemetric ball my track is medium to low. But this ball every now and then would go "thump thump thump" over the dang thumbhole. It seemed like it has been doing this more often. When it does this it goes down the lane farther and jolts on the breakpoint.

The first obvious thing that came to mind was the thumbhole. I needed a slug, and one that was very little beveled which is how I like my thumbhole. So I did, and got it feeling good with one piece of tape and still was doing the same thing.

Perhaps because the Mass Bias is left of the thumbhole and is too stable for my release? I have a Ebonite Apex Adrenaline that was drilled like this and did the same thing so I got the fingerholes plugged and just placed the ring over the former middle finger hole and middle finger hole left of that. This made it track much lower and worked fine without changing the reaction.

Brian,

If you normally track close to the fingers and thumb....having the MB left of the thumb can cause you to clip the thumb hole.

Your problems results from the MB being placed at more than 90° from PAP on a strong asymmetrical ball with a high asym. RG differential. With such cores, there is the danger that the ball not only track over the thumb hole, in the worst case this MB placement causes reverse flare! As far as I know, high track players are very susceptible to such occurences.

Brunswick, for example, warns anybody to place the MB beyond the thumb hole for this reason or to put the MB on the negative side at all. Imagine a MoRich ball with an even stronger MB differential...

On symmetric balls or balls with a low MB influence, placing the MB beyond 90° from PAP is no problem.

A good ball driller should be aware of this danger, though.

No, I'm a medium track player. My track is usually a couple inches left of the thum on most balls. I think this drill pattern is a poor choice. I had an Apex Adrenaline drilled like that with the MB left of the thumb it did the same thing and had to get it redrilled, but it wasn't so bad where it would affect my shot half the time like this ball does. Now that I know this, I will never get a ball with a Mass Bias placed this way,
