1st Motiv ball question: Cruel LE VS Primal TV4
« on: April 16, 2011, 01:11:23 AM »
I am going to dive into the Motiv ring and am wanting to get one of these 2 balls. It looks like they are both pearlized covers so is there really that much difference in the 2? I do see the Cruel LE is asymmetric.

I am a RH tweener with medium revs.

Any comments would be appreciated..

Man, you beat me to the question. I was also debating on those two as well as the Cruel C51. Need something that's angular but still handle a decent amount of oil.

Check out some video's to get you started.
Here's a good one that includes all three balls being compared.
This one down by JustinWi.

I've got a few Motiv balls now, and I love each one of them.  I have a Cruel LE coming in soon to compliment my original Cruel.  I also own a Recon Silver for dry lanes.  I throw some other stuff too, buy Motiv is my favorite right now.

After doing up 5 LE for folks this week, I have seen these trends:

They like drilling angles between 55 and 65, VAL angles between 40 and 55, and pin distances of 4.5-4.75.  No holes to start.
They have shown to hook quite a bit, be continuous, and deal with higher volumes a touch sooner at 1k.

The video shows a direct comparison between a Primal and LE in the comparison section, similar layouts.

I have close spec's to yours 300 revs, 15.5-16 at pins.

The Primal is much smoother off the dry than any other pearl ball I have rolled. It a pearl that doesn't act like a pearl. The additive that gives it the increased Ra value smooths out the over under for me. Works best for me on THS or as a ball that will let me stay in the same part of the lane when they start to break down. The LE has a very strong Asymmetrical core that you really need to know what you want to get the ball drilled right. The carry that I get with both of the Cruel balls is great. The only problem I have seen with the Cruel core is that if drilled too strong it will burn up early.

If you're looking for smoother reaction get the Primal. If you're looking for more back end and drilling options get the LE.

Hope this helps.

Hey jkiser,

Haven't thrown the Cruel LE but my Primal TV4 is also as smooth as Kegeler51 describes (oob).  It allows me to stay in the friction throughout the nite (haven't done this since plastic/urethane) which makes conditions much easier to play as we're not having to "chase" an oil line thru transition.  The dry doesn't really get "that" much drier so moves are much more gradual.

This is still part of what I feel and have seen as a struggle to many bowlers.  Our equipment has hit a plateau in the last few years in regards to strength.  Out here in the west coast, I've seen bowls change lanes over  to synthetic (for quite some time now), change carpeting, flatscreens, seating..etc but they've never changed the machines (probably due to cost) on the backend.  As a result, we're not able to apply more oil because even a reactive ball won't return or we get too much push to the pin decks and that causes out of ranges (pins sliding straight across the deck and standing).  Based on this, our modern day equipment has overpowered the THS conditions easily causing a bowler to adapt to the ball vs the ball adapting to the bowler.

This is why I see Motiv being a much more useable and feasible piece these days. Hope this helps some...

Thanks for all the replies. I ended up ordering a Cruel LE and Primal since I couldn't make up my mind. I  was gonna drill both of them pin above and to the right of the ring since I track so high. Is there anything I should watch out for if I decide to drill them both that way?

Reminds me of the old Deion Sanders commercials when he signed with the Cowboys. Can't decide. I'll take both. LOL
