Looking to try Motiv
« on: September 24, 2013, 07:10:51 AM »
Hi Everyone, I'm seriously considering drilling up a couple Motiv pieces.  I have thrown nothing but Hammer for the last 4 years and have had no complaints but nothing currently coming out is checking my eye from Hammer.  I went to the Ace Mitchell show at the Turning Stone casino in July and was impressed by the Motiv booth...especially when they talked about their longeviety in the covers.  I personnaly have been wanting to drill a Primal Rage since I saw it.  We just got a bunch in for stock as well as a couple Primal Screams so I was planning on drilling those 2 and possibly a Venom Toxim for a new dry lane ball.

What does everyone think of Motiv.

Thanx.

I've been a big fan of Motiv since the SX1.
Hyme29 is right, the Raptor P7 really increased the quality of the balls. You can't go wrong with a Primal Rage, 2Cruel, or Venom Toxin.
Even the seemingly pattern-specific Raptor Talon is a house shot killer with the right layout/surface.

Great equipment that has covered every spectrum of usage and price points out there.  Strong covers and medium covers.  No issues with covers wearing or cracking for me.  Made in America always gets my vote.   :)  And I ain't paid to say that....no staff member here.

My two highest use balls for me in the last year have been a Primal Scream and Thrash Frenzy where I can use equipment with more backend.  Venom Strike when I need a lessor cover.

If looking for light-medium with strong cover I'd look at a Tribal....see Justin's vids that he posted yesterday.  I punched up a Tribal last week and will see what it's about.  Pin under bridge 75*(PAP-pin-PSA)x5"x65*.

I agree with Coach, the Talon is a monster on a house shot if you tame the cover down a little.

If you are looking at the Primal Rage, that's a good choice. And the Primal Scream with the Primal Rage makes a great one two combination. That's what I use for medium length sport shots and the two compliment each other very well.

I'm also a big believer in the Venom Strike, it's kind of the Storm IQ Tour solid, with just a bit weaker cover, but a great ball.

The Motiv balls have a combination of control and power.  A good ball to start with would be the Primal Rage.  If you like that core, you could then drill up a Primal Scream.  I also like the Venon Toxin.  It hooks more than Motiv's chart would lead you to believe.

Motiv put the Venom Strike in the ball guide http://www.motivbowling.com/resources/ball-guide.html because of it's low flare rating and weaker Atomix Solid cover compared to the Fusion and Whiplash covers which are much stronger.

In BTM they rate it with it's OOB cover 9.0, 9.5 and 9.5 for oil 5.5 torque, 12 length, 16.5 backend and 53 total hook.  In OOB and with a stronger layout I'd agree where BTM put the VS is where it should be but Motiv has much stronger balls that they would rate for medium-heavy and higher.

Put a weak layout on the VS slight polish over P2000 and you have a very controllable piece for house lane conditions much like the Toxin or in that range.  Dullish cover with a weak layout it will puke.

Of course this is all debatable for every bowler as our stats are different and conditions that we bowl on are different.  But, this is what I see.  I can understand why Motiv put it low as an early low Rg rolling piece for light-medium though OOB with strong layout BTM rates it as a for heavier.

VS with good sport layout would be a great sport lane condition ball.

IMO you have to watch out for how reviews and manufacturers rate balls and get your pro shop involved with your stats. and conditions you are trying to match up on.  Take a look at how JustinWi lays out his equipment usually with three layouts for his stats.....usually two of the layouts are weak pin up and pin down and one strong.

I just started using Motiv stuff.  So far out of the balls i've drilled the only one i've used is the Primal.  I like the motion a lot and the continuation I saw (albeit just one night) was great.  I also drilled a Venom Toxin and a Thrash Frenzy, the Venom (in a very short sample) is also a great 1-2 punch with the Primal.

I'm looking forward to using the Thrash a little tonight and also ordering the Tribal really soon.

I started using Motiv about a year and a half ago. First ball was a Primal Impulse. I now have 16 Motiv balls. I have been impressed with the continuation of all of their equipment. I have not drilled a Primal Rage or Tribal Yet only because I have not thrown a ball in 11 months due to a foot injury. Their covers take well to surface changes and they are very predictable as far as what to expect

I decided to give Motiv a try also and just picked up a Primal Impulse and a Primal Rage, both are getting punched up and I can't wait to see how they react compared to my beloved Seismic gear.
