Motiv Covert Tank video and written review
« on: May 22, 2019, 01:24:51 AM »

Hello guys! Here is my latest review. The new Motiv Covert Tank.

Urethane balls have never been my favorites. They have been really condition specific for me and I have to be really accurate to have success with them. My carry is usually not the best since I tend to leave a lot of flat corner pins and I can only use them for a short period of time before I have to ball up and move in because of the carry down.

I tried the Motiv Covert Tank on a fresh house shot pattern. The first thing I noticed is the strong downlane motion and how continuous it is compared to other urethane balls I have used in the past.

The Covert Tank is extremely controllable and easy to read. I bowled for about an hour while doing the review and I was able to play different parts of the lane and playing different angles. I started playing up the boards and the ball had a faster response to friction than balls like the Tank Rampage or the Combat Tank, providing more shape downlane. I started moving right and swinging the ball and the Covert Tank offered me a lot of recovery.

Misses outside and the ball had good recovery to hit light pocket as you can see on the video and misses inside the ball still digs in the oil to make its move. I had a lot of room to miss and still hit the pocket, but it definitely works at its best when it finds friction. With the Covert Tank I was able to use parts of the lane that I never could with urethane. Really impressive.

The Torx core revs up the ball and offers a lot of flare, providing a stronger downlane motion. The Frixion cover has a faster response to friction than urethane and a slower response when it is compared to reactive resin, I find this really helpful when you are bowling on tougher conditions where you need control but you also need to create shape downlane.

I found the Covert Tank to be more versatile than I thought. Motiv described the ball perfectly. The Covert Tank gives you the predictability of a urethane ball and the continuation and shape down the lane of a reactive ball.

The Covert Tank provides a motion I have never seen before. This unique motion will be helpful to a lot of bowlers. High rev bowlers who needs a piece stronger than urethane but weaker than reactive will love this ball. Speed dominant bowlers that struggle with urethane but wants to have a ball that provides control without losing carry will find in the Covert Tank a useful weapon.

Overall I feel that this ball is a great addition to the Motiv lineup. It is a motion that I have never seen before and it fits perfectly between reactive resin and urethane.

This ball will be a great option to blend those typical over/under conditions and also a great weapon to use on short oil patterns where you need to control the breakpoint but at the same time have a stronger down lane motion without creating the carrydown urethane does.

Thank you for watching. Any comments are greatly appreciated!

In my opinion, the AD Solid is cleaner and has more shape downlane than the Covert Tank. The Covert Tank reads the lane earlier and has a smoother reaction when it hits friction. The AD Solid might be a tad stronger overall but not by much.

You can see my AD Solid video so you can compare how they roll.

You are welcome! From what I’ve seen from both, the Covert Tank flares more and is earlier than the AD Solid (The Torx core has a lower RG and higher differential) and the Frixion cover has a rougher finish so it will read the lane earlier and it will provide a smoother reaction when it hits the friction)

Any other question, let me know.

Note I use a majority of Motiv stuff and wouldn't suggest a ball from another brand within the forum unless brought up... That being said the After Dark solid and pearl are gems. They're so smooth and don't cover a lot of boards, they love friction.

Looking forward throwing the Thrill and Covert Tank. High hopes for the Thrill to work on burn THS but I'm thinking the Covert Tank will end up left of the Venom Shock on my chart, of course it can't go there due to venom marketing.

Obviously I haven't thrown a Covert Tank, looking forward to it though. I have a Venom Shock and an After Dark Solid. If the Covert is a touch earlier and smoother as mentioned above it would have the makings for something special.

I should note the Shock to be much stronger than the After Dark Solid so it's probably a stretch the Covert Tank is anywhere near it even though staffers are bending their lines quite a bit on YouTube.

My after dark pearl is a house shot killer. But I need something for short sport patterns. But I’m worried with the after dark solid it might not flare enough to react, even in short patterns

I used the AD Solid way more than the pearl on house shot. For short patterns, you are right, the AD Solid even with some surface might be too clean for and it won't flare as much compared with the Covert Tank. I used the Covert Tank yesterday on the Sydney pattern and ball worked great.

For me, the Covert Tank is about 1 zone weaker than the Venom Shock. With that being said, the Cover Tank is earlier and smoother than the Shock, but it covers more boards than I thought. The Shock is overall more ball and it has a stronger backend than the Covert Tank.

I have been using the Covert Tank in a center where there is a lot of friction, and I mean a LOT... The Covert Tank has been a great addition to my bag. Ball offers the recovery than urethane doesn't and it offers the control on tougher conditions where stronger reactive equipment can't. It has a really unique shape that is hard to describe, it flares a lot but it is really smooth. Hopefully you can see what I am talking about in my video review.
