Motiv peeps, need suggestions

Looking to try Motiv products for the first time.

 

I'm a speed dominant straight player. Many of the conditions I bowl on are on the lighter drier side with some length. But, since this will be my first time trying motiv, I would like to know which is a good benchmark ball to try first.

 

I've seen The Primal from different types of bowlers, and the bright orange looking one (sorry for my ignorance).  They both look good going down the lane and the reaction is smooth with some hard continuation turn off the spot. It's something I look for in a ball, and not the skid/flip type reaction. These are the only two balls I've seen so far. But, if there's another ball that would fit my style and give me a middle of the road look, I'll be sure to have it rolling by Tuesday. 

 

Anyway, if you Motiv peeps can help me out, I'll greatly appreciate it.

First off thank you for considering our products! The orange sphere you were referring to is the Recon RX1. That ball was a solid version of the MotivX coverstock that has been discontinued. The Silver Pearl Recon RX1 took over in that category. Those two pieces were great for low volume and shorter patterns such as Cheetah.

 

Primal is a great ball for the reaction your eye likes to see. I like to think of this ball as the get out of jail free piece. It's very smooth, and predictable yet still gets through the pins exceptionally well. The Primal is great for smoothing out over/under or spotty lane conditions. This is an excellent benchmark piece.

 

Depending on your ball speed, and rev rate you may also want to consider the QZ2 Backdraft. It's a mid range product. The Backdraft has a hybrid coverstock as opposed to a straight pearl as seen in the black/blue QZ2. The advantage to this is we see a little more midlane and a strong continous motion down lane. This ball comes from the factory 2000 with power gel polish. I personally have drilled several of these with different patterns and surface preps and they all serve a purpose. This is my personal favorite of all the new releases. Very versatile product!

 

If you can still get them I suggest looking into an SR2 as well. This ball worked well for many different types of bowlers. We're actually introducing a new product that comes out September 2nd called the Sigma Tour. It features the same Sigma core from the SR2, but has a new coverstock called Atomix. You can expect to see about 3' more length than an SR2 and more angle down lane. If you can get yor hands on an SR2 and drill up a Sigma Tour when it becomes available you will have a phenomenal 1-2 punch!

Sorry if I wasn't clear, but as far as benchmark pieces go def. consider SR2, Primal TV4, and the QZ2 Backdraft.

 

If I know your stats - ball speed, rev rate, axis tilt, axis rotation, etc. I will be able to recommend a layout for your new ball as well if you want.

 Thanks Darren for the reply.. Anyway, my stats are:

Speed 17-17.5
Revs 255-275
10* tilt
40* rotation
(pap: 5 1/2 @ 3/4)

The primal looks like a ball I would like to try first...thanks again for the suggestion.. now back to work...

Based on your stats you don't have a lot of rotation and your tilt is low as well. My axis tilt is only 10 degrees too.

 

With the strength of the bowling balls today having 15-20 degrees of axis tilt helps the ball go through its transitions on the lane better. Not a big deal though as the majority of good bowlers all share this in common.

 

The key is to use drillings that will retain tilt and rotation.

 

In symmetric pieces such as the Primal use at least a 5" pin to PAP. With your rev rate I think this would be ideal. make sure the ball has about 5/8-3/4 oz. pos. side weight before drilling so you can tweak the reaction with a balance hole if you so choose. If you use dual angles the drilling angle has no effect on angle sums and ratios on SYMMETRICAL equipment.

 

With asymmetrics such as the Cruel or Raptor you're going to want to use shorter pins such as 2.75-3" from your PAP so the ball retains tilt. Also use 2:1-3:1 ratios on Asymmetrical pieces. An example would 60 x 3 x 20 (3:1). tweak with a hole as needed. I bowl on Long Island where there is a ton of friction. I have been experiementing with the P1 holes as they help these monster asymmetrical cores save energy for further down lane where it's needed most.
