MOTIV Primal Scream Review and Video (Big Back End!)
« on: September 16, 2012, 06:37:52 PM »
I had heard the buzz about the MOTIV Primal Scream… about it being clean through the fronts, and a super strong angular back end finish. Even though I had high expectations, I’d have to say I was still surprised how strong it is.  I drilled mine up with a layout of 70* x 4 1/2 x 40*.  When you play deep inside angles, you need to have confidence that your ball will recover when you hit your spot. The Primal Scream is just that ball for me. That confidence allows me to be firm with my speed when I’m in there around the 4th / 5th arrow, without worrying that the ball will blow through the breakpoint.  Here is a video of me throwing the Primal Scream. In this video I also throw the Primal Instinct, 2 Cruel and Ascent Pearl for comparison purposes:

As you can see in the video, this ball has a pleasing crisp shape on the backend. When I hit the pocket thin with the Primal Scream – the pins really mix well… when other balls may leave a 2 pin, or worse – a 2-8-10.

As all tournament bowlers know, you need to have a strong piece that allows you to play deep when the lanes are trashed. This is the best ball I’ve thrown that gives me that look. Or, if you just bowl in a house shot league and are looking for a ball that will make an aggressive move down lane to wow your friends, either way this is the ball for you.

What type of shot was this filmed on? THS? Was it fresh? etc.

No offense but without that type of information, I can't tell whether ball is doing the work or the lane is. If this is a THS, then it doesn't really tell us much as just about any ball can do that on THS. Justin's video was better as it was filmed on sport shots that really show the dynamics of the ball. I have seen people make urethane do what you did on THS, especially with no thumb. Sorry, just being honest.

Yes, it was on a fresh THS. No offense taken...Justin makes great videos! :)  The primary reason I did the video on a THS is because that is the type of condition that most people bowl on.

Because of the way that the ball clears the heads and hooks on the back end, the best time to use this ball is on a broken down sport pattern. (I typically would use a more even rolling ball such as a Sigma Hybrid or 2 Cruel on longer fresh sport shots). My Tuesday night league sets out patterns, so I'm hoping to set up some filming after the league session, to show the look the Scream gives me relative to other balls.

Kevin, thanks for the video. THS or not, your comparison shots, especially against the 2Cruel, give me good feedback on what I can expect from the Scream. I'm far more rev challenged than you, so the Scream will allow me to play deeper than my current comfort zone.

Thanks again.

Thanks for the info.

Glad you did not take offense, as it was not my intention. Anyone who takes the time to put together videos like this should be applauded. In the future, it would be good to put on the video a note or when you post the link, let everyone know what shot is was on. Keep up the good work.

I really enjoyed the your video, especially the comparison shots with the location at the arrows and break point! Also, you have to be one of the smoothest "no thumb" bowlers I have ever seen! Keep up the good work.

Kevin, very good analysis of the Scream. I just got mine drilled up, and I threw it for the first time following a first shift women's league. There were lots of polyester balls being sprayed from all angles, resulting in oil push down and a generally chopped up THS condition. I didn't want to be fooled by fresh backends that make most anything look good.

The Primal Scream allowed me to play deeper than my usual comfort zone with complete confidence. I was 7 boards left (target and feet) of the line I was playing with my Primal Impulse. The Scream is a nice compliment to the 2Cruel and Raptor P7 for heavier oil shots.

I think Steven is right on here.  A mistake for some players to think the PS will be good for broken down shots with lighter volume.  I don't have one but what I've seen from my 2 Cruel with Whiplash hybrid is for medium at the least.  Now everyone has different terms for differing conditions.

I use the 2 Cruel on USBC White #2 and it's a monster but on the house shot in same center 39' 19ml wet/dry the 2 Cruel is a puppy on that light-medium pattern.   I'd say the Primal Scream would be the same on that volume.  I use a QZ1 Red for the house shot and it's perfect.

Different strokes for different folks.
