Motiv Trident Quest video and written review
« on: October 01, 2017, 04:25:21 PM »

Hello guys! This time we had the chance to try the new Trident Quest. We bowled on our house shot pattern (Kegel Main Street, 41’) and this ball definitely performed as advertised. Really impressive.

The Trident Quest is an easy ball to read. As most pearlized balls, is very clean through the front part of the lane, but what makes the Quest different in my opinion is how strong reads the mid part of the lane. This is really helpful since the ball never missed the breakpoint, and somehow, the Quest still have tons of energy to make a strong move down the lane. This the first Motiv ball with this type of reaction, and a much needed one.

I started laying the ball around 10 with 6 as my breakpoint and the ball had a great reaction. The only thing I noticed is that at least for me, with my low/medium rev rate, misses inside resulted in the ball going high. The ball stores so much energy so when it hits friction, it makes a hard right turn. When I missed outside, the ball offered me great recovery down the lane and I was still able to hit the pocket nicely.

I started moving right with both my feet and my eyes and the Trident Quest surprisingly let me swing the ball away from the pocket and see enough recovery. I was able to move up to the third arrow, having 8 at my breakpoint and the Quest always recovered with a strong backend motion.

Overall this ball allowed me to play from multiple angles, it is definitely a versatile piece.

I compared the Trident Quest with two balls. The Trident and the Primal Fear.

The Trident is a bit stronger than the Trident Quest. The Trident has a more rounded shape, it is earlier than the Quest, it also provides a strong midlane read, but the Trident is smoother down the lane.

The Primal Fear is weaker overall than the Trident Quest. The Fear reads the lane a tad earlier and is not as fast off the spot as the Quest is. While is also an angular ball, I feel the Quest is a bigger ball in terms of hook potential and angularity.

The Trident Quest fills a hole in the Motiv lineup. This is the first asymmetrical pearl in years for Motiv and it fits perfectly into the current lineup. The Quest offers a shape that Motiv didn’t have before. It is very clean through the fronts, but combines a strong midlane read with a strong and predictable backend motion.

It is a great complement to the Trident and strong solid balls like the Jackal Ghost and the Forza SS. When these balls start to hook too early, the Trident Quest will be a great option to go to on most medium and heavy oil patterns.

On a house shot, this ball can be easily used both on fresh and on broken down conditions. On sport shot patterns, the Quest will be a great option once there are some friction and you have to open up the lane.

Overall, The Quest is a versatile piece that allows to play from different angles and on different conditions. This ball is the most angular piece in the Motiv lineup and it will definitely fit into a lot of bowling styles.

Thank you for watching!

It looks like this and the ghost would be different enough to have in the bag, opposed to the original Trident.

I was wondering the same thing doom;  You really have to pay attention to these performance balls, as you can fooled very easily, as you can have 2 of the same pieces that do almost the same thing   these companies'  these days.  ???

Let's face it, on 90% of shots, if you can use a Ghost, you can use a Trident. Slightly different motions, but nothing that can't be manufactured by a release change. Funny thing is that no one wants to learn to change their release at all, so they just keep buying balls. People using plastic still turning the crud out of it, getting all pissy then their "ball that isn't supposed to hook" checks up in the midlane. It's going to hook because friction.

Sorry Angel, that just became an impromptu rant! Good video, buddy!

I agree with you all to a certain extent. When you use a ball like the Jackal Ghost or a Trident on a house shot, yes, both will provide slightly different motions, that's why when you compare them on videos the difference might appear to be not as huge to justify buying both.

On the other hand, when you bowl on a sport shot or a flat pattern, then that's when you will notice a bigger gap between balls.

I also agree with the difference between a ball like the Ghost and the Quest. The Quest is way cleaner than the Ghost and it has a faster response to friction. They are different enough to have both in the bag. For me, The Quest is more versatile... I think I will be able to bowl with it on fresh and on broken down conditions more easily. Plus I am a lefty, so...  ;D

The OG Trident just looks too close to the Ghost to justify having both, especially when you have the Quest that is, as you said, cleaner and transitions harder.

Of course their different on sport shots, we understand that have plenty of us have bowled them;  But REMEMBER that most of the reviews and the bowler's  bowl on the easy stuff, as such the differences are not that significant;  bump out to the dry, BOOM sideways motion.

Can't tell much when that's the case on the easy  stuff.

I agree. When I first started doing the reviews, I was doing half of the video on a house shot and the other half on a sport shot to show our audience how a ball reacts on different patterns, but I got a lot of requests on doing the videos only using a house shot, so I decided to go with it and do only videos on house shot.

I have done a couple of reviews  lately on sport shots as well when I feel that the ball is  more of a niche ball (like urethane, for example) I feel that will help the viewer to see how ball reacts on a tougher condition, it is specially helpful for all of those viewers who bowls tournaments and on sport shots.

I am all in on showing different patterns to show the strengths of the ball, unfortunately it seems that what people wants to see is a house shot... And at the end of the day, I am doing this to try the help people like me, the average bowler, to see how a ball reacts for someone who doesn’t have 18 MPH or 500 revs.

But I am always open to try different things and I’m always open to suggestions!

Respecting the differences between the Ghost and the Trident, I agree. On a house shot both will be similar, being the Jackal Ghost a tad earlier and smoother, the Trident while it also had a more rounded shape, it is stronger down the lane, but with the right surface adjustment you can make the Ghost to go longer and save more energy down the lane the same as you can smooth out the Trident reaction using a lower grit.  they won’t be never the same ball, but close enough, specially on a house shot... But when you compare both with a ball like the Quest, that’s when you’ll see a big difference... I used it tonight in League and the ball is definitely the most angular ball I’ve ever used from Motiv, I’m liking it so far.

As much as I like what I see in the Trident Quest, I am going to wait and see what Motiv replaces the Primal Rage Remix with. I'll decide then and get one or the other, but not both.

Nothing about the Trident Quest wants me to pull a knew jerk reaction and buy it right away. Especially, if they use a version the Hexion cover on an angular heavy oil ball.
Balls: Motiv Trident Abyss, Motiv Golden Jackal, Motiv Hydra and Motiv Hyper Sniper. All made in the USA.

Thanks for the excellent(as always) video Angel, you do good work!

My new Quest is already drilled and waiting, but I have not picked it up from the shop yet. Lately I have been very successful with the original Trident and love the idea of a new ball with that core.
