Motiv Trident Quest video and written review
« on: October 01, 2017, 04:25:21 PM »

Hello guys! This time we had the chance to try the new Trident Quest. We bowled on our house shot pattern (Kegel Main Street, 41’) and this ball definitely performed as advertised. Really impressive.

The Trident Quest is an easy ball to read. As most pearlized balls, is very clean through the front part of the lane, but what makes the Quest different in my opinion is how strong reads the mid part of the lane. This is really helpful since the ball never missed the breakpoint, and somehow, the Quest still have tons of energy to make a strong move down the lane. This the first Motiv ball with this type of reaction, and a much needed one.

I started laying the ball around 10 with 6 as my breakpoint and the ball had a great reaction. The only thing I noticed is that at least for me, with my low/medium rev rate, misses inside resulted in the ball going high. The ball stores so much energy so when it hits friction, it makes a hard right turn. When I missed outside, the ball offered me great recovery down the lane and I was still able to hit the pocket nicely.

I started moving right with both my feet and my eyes and the Trident Quest surprisingly let me swing the ball away from the pocket and see enough recovery. I was able to move up to the third arrow, having 8 at my breakpoint and the Quest always recovered with a strong backend motion.

Overall this ball allowed me to play from multiple angles, it is definitely a versatile piece.

I compared the Trident Quest with two balls. The Trident and the Primal Fear.

The Trident is a bit stronger than the Trident Quest. The Trident has a more rounded shape, it is earlier than the Quest, it also provides a strong midlane read, but the Trident is smoother down the lane.

The Primal Fear is weaker overall than the Trident Quest. The Fear reads the lane a tad earlier and is not as fast off the spot as the Quest is. While is also an angular ball, I feel the Quest is a bigger ball in terms of hook potential and angularity.

The Trident Quest fills a hole in the Motiv lineup. This is the first asymmetrical pearl in years for Motiv and it fits perfectly into the current lineup. The Quest offers a shape that Motiv didn’t have before. It is very clean through the fronts, but combines a strong midlane read with a strong and predictable backend motion.

It is a great complement to the Trident and strong solid balls like the Jackal Ghost and the Forza SS. When these balls start to hook too early, the Trident Quest will be a great option to go to on most medium and heavy oil patterns.

On a house shot, this ball can be easily used both on fresh and on broken down conditions. On sport shot patterns, the Quest will be a great option once there are some friction and you have to open up the lane.

Overall, The Quest is a versatile piece that allows to play from different angles and on different conditions. This ball is the most angular piece in the Motiv lineup and it will definitely fit into a lot of bowling styles.

Thank you for watching!

Angel, great video as always!! I'm looking at a stronger asym pearl and am curious how you would compare this to the Mako Attack and Black Widow gold in terms of overall strength and shape? Or what else it might compare too? Thank you

Thank you beeks! Well, I haven’t thrown the Mako Attack and the Black Widow Gold, but one of the Average Joe Reviews staffers has both and he loved them, specially his Mako Attack. You can see the reviews in our channel.

This is my opinion from what I’ve seen on the lanes. I feel that the Quest is the strongest of the three. I’ll start with the BW Gold. For me it seems to be more rolly than the other two, it is smoother down the lane and I feel is weaker than both. For me the BW Gold works better when there is some friction after a couple of games, that’s where the ball shines.

The Mako Attack will be closer to the Quest in terms of shape, both are angular and have similar length, but I feel that the Quest handles more oil than the Attack both having out the box surface. Overall I think the Trident Quest has more hook potential than the Mako Attack and the BW Gold. They are all good balls, but what what I’ve seen from the Quest since I got it has impressed me, it is super angular but it never skids too far, it has a strong mid lane read so I think that is why even with how strong is down the lane, is also predictable.

I hope this helps and let me know what you end up getting!

Thanks for the reply and information Angel. Exactly what I was looking for. I'm really liking what I see of the Quest. I think I'm going to call my PSO and get it ordered today, lol,  Thank you and keep the great videos and reviews coming!

Thanks for the excellent(as always) video Angel, you do good work!

My new Quest is already drilled and waiting, but I have not picked it up from the shop yet. Lately I have been very successful with the original Trident and love the idea of a new ball with that core.

Thanks for the kind words Milo! I’m glad you liked it!

Let me know how the Quest rolls for you. I liked the Trident but for me it was more of a condition specific ball, unfortunately there’s not a lot of volume where I usually bowl and the Trident seemed that it needed some oil in the fronts. I love the motion but for me was only useable for 1 or 2 games. The Quest having a pearlized coverstock seems to be more versatile and I have been able to use it more on my house shot. I hope you’ll like it as much as I am liking mine.

As much as I like what I see in the Trident Quest, I am going to wait and see what Motiv replaces the Primal Rage Remix with. I'll decide then and get one or the other, but not both.

Nothing about the Trident Quest wants me to pull a knew jerk reaction and buy it right away. Especially, if they use a version the Hexion cover on an angular heavy oil ball.

It might be a while till they fill the Remix spot. Motiv usually takes some time to fill the empty slots in their lineup. The Havoc spot has been empty for a while and who knows if they are replacing a ball that is in their current lineup... I used the Quest on the Dead man’s curve this weekend and the ball made me feel like I was bowling on a house shot. It handles more oil than I thought. Pretty impressive.

The Dare Devil Trick is different than any ball Motiv has out right now. I have a teammate with the Code Red. Great looking ball, but I couldn't spend that kind of coin for a 10 year old cover.

I was intrigued about the Quest as I have had success with other Motiv ballls but the original Trident didnt fit my game..  Not all balls work out and fit our games.  Ive seen all the videos on the Quest and in most it looks pretty strong. And most reviews I have read were positive.  Bowling Journal  gave this ball a pretty high rating and a really positive review.  Most staffers of course hype the balls and rarely say anything negative if at all, except for Luke with Storm/ Roto. He is the most unbiased staffer I have seen and actually like his reviews. Gotta love true honesty. Now, Average Joes has good videos and reviews as well. I went ahead and bought this ball friday night and will throw it tomorrow night in league. Hoping it rolls and hooks as much as Ive seen and read. How strong is this ball suppose to be? If you watch the new Tamer Bowling video on it, this ball did nothing in their video...lol... They gave it low scores. But, I have seen and read mostly good things about it. I know I will find out tomorrow but just curious on others thoughts of what they think..
