RAPTOR TALON - cover death from ball cleaner??
« on: November 11, 2015, 06:06:33 PM »
I remember reading about the Raptor Talon cover dying after using a certain cleaner on it.  There was also a method to get the ball back to normal and hooking again. I can not find this post.

Which cleaner did this? Does anyone know anything about this?

It was actually the Raptor P7, and it was posted by JustinWi. He didn't specify the cleaner in his posts for obvious reasons.

I can tell you it's not Remedy RX, CnD, or Hook-It. Stick to these proven cleaners, and you'll be OK.  :)

If it were mine, I would try to get it back to it's original NIB surface which is 5000 Grit Laser Scan-Polished using the Motiv instructions in the link I am posting here and go from there ...

Every time I have resurfaced a Motiv ball, I have used these instructions and they have always worked without fail for me, anyhow.

I experienced this with my Sigma Sting. I had about 60 games on it was one of my all time favorite balls.  I saw a slight loss of reaction (basically was leaving more flat 10s) with it so cleaned it with Hook-it and was hoping it'd be back to normal and it lost a good arrow of reaction after cleaning it and was never the same after that.  Tried several different things and was able to get some of the reaction back bUT it's not the same ball.  I've done little surfaces including the process to bring it back to oob surface, oil extractions etc. But nothing has brought it even close to the ball it was brand new.

I contacted someone from motiv to try and get some advice on the situation and all I got was our balls don't die answer with the attitude essentially implying I was full of it or something so that was it for me with Motiv.

Make sure that the cleaning didn't make the ball cover "too strong".  It could have made the ball roll out so it lost backend reaction.  Sometimes if a ball cover is too strong it will hook less and cover less boards and have no continuation.

That is why I like to get some games on a ball before I judge it. Can't tell what the ball is going to be until you get a bit of oil and track into the cover.

Thanks for the info.  I actually just used all 3 of those on it yesterday. I like to use the Remedy RX after the CnD and Hook it to get the bit of residue off the cover.

I agree.  The Motiv surface instructions are pretty good.  I find that with most Motiv balls I like the surface a little duller than what the out of box specifies.  I see a little too much wiggle on oil and carry down with the out of box on most balls.

I've tried it at just about every surface under the sun and its just not the same ball.  I was fully aware it may have been rolling out and first thing i did was take it back to box surface per motiv instructions.  I've never seen anything like it before.  I've worked in pro shops for almost 10 years cleaned equipment with hook it too many times to count and really couldn't even imagine what carotene would ever happen.

Was that the first time you used it on that ball?  Have you had a problem using it on other balls?

I know hook-it has a good rep but I am a little leery of using it. Same with clean n dull.  I'm not a chemist buy my clean n dull melted the bottle it was in.  So if it does that, is there a chance that it does something to the ball cover over a repeated use?  Also, I was using hook-it at the alley and cleaning my ball on one of the plastic chairs.  After cleaning the ball I went to wipe the overspray off the chair and the plastic chair material was a bit gummy, soft, and sticky.

I had a similar issue with the Raptor P7 when I first had it. I saw the ball reaction change drastically even though I cleaned my equipment as soon as I got home from bowling. I was using Clean n' Dull and Power Gel Clean the majority of the time with it and never thought that it could have been one of the cleaners. The same thing happened to my Track 716T using those cleaners as well. That's the only Motiv ball I've had that I've had issues with losing ball reaction at a fast rate.

Being that the Raptor has an aggressive cover that soaks up oil, I then tried using something stronger like Ultimate Rejuvenator and then followed it up with Power Gel Scuff and it really seemed to work with that combo. Right now, I do the same thing with my Forza and decided to keep it that way with all my solid balls.
