I bowled a State tournament at Strike and Spare about 10 years ago and quickly went 170-300-170. Went through 3 balls (all you carried in those days) and lines the first game, found something (obviously) on the 2nd pair and quickly lost all reaction on the last pair. Had a smile on my face the whole time thinking if they did this for a State tournament, I wonder what THS is like.

Charlest just answered my question 10 years later.

Oakwood is a good center, don't get me wrong...There is nothing wrong with bowling in a center that boosts your confidence some while you develop your skills.  The most important thing to remember that Oakwood like all centers is that your average is based on the lane conditions and not always on your own physical tallents.

The problem with Oakwood is that there is no RESPECT for bowlers there from the bowlers themselves.  They are oohed and ahhhed by how many "rings" you own and not how good of a bowler you really are.

I'm far from the best bowler in the world, but I bowl in another state and have just alone this year gained more respect from players in the other state because of tournament play, league point wins and overall knowledge of the game.  I might not average 230, but I get the respect from the bowlers in my leagues and have grown much better friendships outside of Oakwood.

The other places I bowl at it doesnt matter how many rings you own, but  what matters most to them is how well you show up when you have a chance to win, and how good of a person you are with your attitude.  I can't tell you how many complete strangers just say hello to me, or talk alittle about bowling with me..and this such a great thing because I really love this game and want to talk and help people.  In the 5+ years I've been around Oakwood I can count on my hand the number of times somebody said hello to me out of the blue or had a intrest in talking.  It sucks in there, the people stink..sorry but its true.

I also don't know who you are...and you probably don't know who I am...but I'm a small fish in a very large bowling world pond...

Some places I like to go when I have time and want to work on my game...

Dover Lanes - Dover, NJ
Warren Lanes - Phillipsburg, NJ
AMF Strike and Spare
Park Way Lanes (a very very beat up wood surface, resin leave home, a good test!)

Circle Lanes (A true synthetic lane wall, good place to go when your feeling down on your game and you need a pick me up)
Rockaway Lanes - Useally PBA lane conditions on Sunday nights, plus the home of PBA member and Team USA GOLD level coach Ken Yokobosky and his pro shop.

Another good test is Garden Palace in Clifton NJ if you are ever in the area. Wood lanes and VERY spotty. Carry is not good either so you'll get to shoot a bunch of spares. Very close to Parkway Lanes in Elmwood Park.

The Palace still has a bit of wire around the fence, but it's really not a bad area. Great place to practice.

Bowler City is still going strong.

Anyone know if Butler bowl is still open?

There is one south of Eatontown called Monmouth Lanes (I think)
Also one I see right before the Driscoll Bridge on the Parkway every morning.

There's 2 off Rt 9 on the north side of the Raritan canal if that's what you're looking at: Majestic Lanes and Woodbridge Lanes.

Roosevelt in Jersey City was torn down a few months ago.

If it counts, there used to be a plcae called Paul's Bar and Bowling in Clifton. I think it had 4 lanes and the ball returns for both pair was on 1 wall. You actually had to cross a pair of lanes to get your ball back. Good stuff.

I love ancient history.

Anyone remember walking the length of Edison Lanes 111 (or wasit 101?) lanes from one end to the other. I think the house was in 2 different time zones!

It was torn down sometime in the 1980s to make room for a Pathmark supermarket, the kind of which, in New Jersey, grosses $1,000,000.00 per week!! Now if any center anywhere made that kind of money, we'd see a lot more bowling alleys/centers/houses.

It might gross a mill, but it probably nets 20 thou.  Supermarket margins suck.

I doubt that vigorously. You might be seeing the "declared" profit margin (for tax purposes), not the actual profit margin. No business in their right mind would pay the overhead involved with the building maintenance, buying and selling all those food and other supplies, insurance costs, AND  paying all those salaries AND health benefits for $20K per week. On $1 million gross, profit are more likely in the $100K - $250K per week. Otherwise they WOULD NOT BE IN BUSINESS. Otherwise they CANNOT stay in business.
