Parkway Lanes - Elmwood Park, NJ
« on: January 10, 2005, 12:02:50 AM »
Has anyone bowled there?  If so, what is the house like?  I plan to bowl in a tournament in the not to distant future.

TIA,

Vernon

I bowled there a few times with in the past 3 months or so, I guess your bowling in that upcoming college tournament. Well it has a bad wood surface that usually plays out to the right in the track area. They have an old oil machine so do not expect anything fancy with the pattern. just bring something for when they get burnt because that will happen fast on that old wood surface.

NextLevel,

thanks for the 'heads-up'.  I didn't know their lanes were wood.  Question, would I get away with using urethane?  I could probably get away with a V2 Sweet, no?  Reason for asking, I haven't bowled on wood with today's equipment and from what I've learned/read, balls track very quickly.  What type of ball would you recommend?  Curious to know.

Thanks,

Vernon

P.S.  Tournament is Jan 23rd.  Friend of mine asked me to bowl on his team, so i don't know much more about the event.

Very old wood lanes, big, big over under normally. Track area is basically between the first and second arrow. The more you go inside the heavier the amount of oil, very heavy from 15-15. You can use urethane, as long as you stay near the track area. Harder to really swing the lane there because you never seem to get the same reaction twice. You are probably best going with a hooking ball that rolls earlier to start and you may get away with the Sweet later in the day.

Like NLPS said, they will dry up near the track pretty quickly. Also, your ball will look like you bowled 30 with it after 3 games. They get beat up pretty good there.

vernon,

parkway destroyed my hot wire the first day i had it 2 years ago, taking a nice chunk out of my thumb area on its way up the return.  the lanes are old, inconsistent, and whatever oil is down either disappears or ends up part of the sirt and crud that comes back up the return with the ball.  dont bring a single ball that hooks, as ive seen just about every house bowler using urethane or the old black balls in leagues.

thanks guys.  Now ya making it sound like I should rethink my decision about bowling there.... LOL  Sounds like I'll bring my 2 'oldies but goodies'....  Red Pearl Hammer and Track Synergy (green pearl).  I've an old purple Beast with low mileage as well.

Thanks,

V

If you want to go up the track, you can use urethane, and you better not have too much hand to do so. I bowled there for years and and always played inside the track area with something dull, so you can use something that hooks.

But like Hotwire said, don't use your favorite equipment, it will get pretty beat up.

I'm still a house mouse at Parkway.  You're right about most of your recommendation, but the shot is off the ditch, not between 5-10.  The ball of choice, for the better righthanders, is pretty much a burgandy hammer, though you can get away with resin if you have a lot of speed.  The problem is that there is so much oil in the middle (10-10) that you cannot play inside.  There is no recovery if you swing it out to the oil line, and there's too much over/under to swing it into the dry.  Not much back end, either.  Better off figuring out how to go straight up the boards.

Me, I'm left handed, so none of this matters!

Right on point!!!!!  I bowled a small tournament yesterday.  All I can say is "SHEESH!" ... I haven't bowled wood lanes since.... 1997 (when I last bowled before returning summer 2004 due to knee surgery).  Outside 8 was dry.  Heavy oil in the middle.  Had a lefty on my team who suffered horribly (hell, lot of righties did as well... LOL).  Main problem was speed control.  Sometimes too fast, other times damn ball made a right turn!

The amazin thing about your post is I did witness A LOT of burgundy Hammers!!!!  I later learned most of the people using old equipment were those who bowled in this house (advantage to them as I and many others have never bowled there).  There was a bowler on my pair who used particle.  Had a lot of hand and speed.  Ripping the rack with a some swing in his shot.  Another thing, the approach was slippery as all heck!!!

Overall, though I didn't ball that good, I had a good time.  Always good meeting new people.
