StrikeMaster Lanes, DE announces sudden closing - forever...
« on: December 06, 2005, 02:38:00 PM »

Shame.... it is close to me, always full, and everyone there has been
nothing but hard working friendly professionals..... deep sadness

SEAFORD- A popular hangout will not be spared from the wrecking ball.  Strikemaster Bowling Alley has been an avenue for safe fun in Seaford for about 20 years.  The bowling alley is a popular hangout for senior citizens and families, but now they will have to find a new place for entertainment.

Employees say the alley will close December 31st for unknown reasons.  They say they got the news last week.  Ever since then people have been rolling in to say goodbye.

Ten year old bowler, Kaitlyn Steelman, says it will be tough to see the alley go.

"I was very disappointed, because this bowling alley has a lot of history in it.  One of my friends, Friday night, she was crying because it was closing down."

An alley manager says the owners told him the alley would be closing, but not what would be replacing it.

  Yes.... AMF center.

It just hosted a regional PBA tourney and I bowled a ProAm there
recently as well. I often talk to the people there (pro-shop, manager, etc)
and they were looking forward to hosting the event again next year.

Something, obviously, suddenly changed for them to announce a quick close.
It leaves the leagues bowling there this winter in the lurch.... just before
the holidays too.

Sucks big time....

I don't believe it was an AMF center.  It's been a few years since I bowled a Regional there, but I don't recall seeing an AMF corporate sign on it.  If I remember correctly, the sign on it simply said Strikemaster Lanes, unlike every AMF Center that I've seen the has the big AMF logo on the building. If you search the AMF site for centers near 19973 (the Seaford ZIP), it doesn't show up. And I don't think that AMF is efficient enough to have updated their center location database overnight.

You are correct in that it does not have much AMF badging on the building,
but all the equipment (ball returns... etc) are AMF.

So it goes.... I'm sure the next step is Home Depot or Lowes or something...gads

I loved this bowling alley.  I bowled there many times during my 4 years in college on the Eastern Shore and they always seemed to get a ton of business and hosted great regional events every year.  It was one of the best centers in the lower delaware area.  It's sad to see it go.  I'm gonna try to get up there to throw a few before the end of the month.

Earlier today I sent Curt Pezzano (General Manager at StrikeMaster) the
following message. Some of you old timer PBA tour followers might recognize
the "Pezzano" name from somewhere too (especially if you've been watching the
ESPN classic shows lately).

Subject: Deep Sadness.... Sorry to hear the news...

  Curt....

I was shocked and sorry to hear the news that StrikeMaster is closing down
(as reported by WBOC News last night). I am really sad. After about 10 years
of NOT bowling regularly, it was a visit to StrikeMaster just last spring that
got me excited about bowling again and reignited my passion for the game.
Specifically, it was the nice people and friendly atmosphere of StrikeMaster
that I appreciated. The staff knowing my name in a very short time, doing
business with Jamie's ProShop, and of course enjoying the league bowling, PBA
Regional Event, and taking part in the ProAm held in October. I have nothing
by glowing comments about StrikeMaster Lanes. I was looking forward to joining
another league there next summer and fall.

Anyway, I just wanted to send a message that even though my relationship with
StrikeMaster Lanes was a short one (suddenly too short) it was also a great
one that I will remember.

Thanks for all your hard work and time. I wish you and the rest of the staff
there good luck and good wishes. And, most of all - good bowling!

Okay, learn't a couple things. Not an AMF house. It is independent but uses
AMF equipment.

The building is being converted not completely demolished, but no more
bowling. Rumor is that it is going to be the headquarters of a trucking
company *and* possibly a radiology center as well.

But, in short, owners carving building up into a more profitable combination
of businesses (or so they think) .... to the demise of the bowling center.

--sigh---

Whatever the case, if the proshop owner decides to go it alone
somewhere else after strikemaster closes he'll still have my business. He does
good work.

Anyone want to open up a brand spanking new bowling center near Salisbury MD?
It is getting sparse around here.

Not sure of all the details but I heard rumor this past week that a "new" center will be going up somewhere in Middletown De within the next year.  As I heard it the Owners of a smaller center in Wilmington have purchased the contents of the now closed Dover Bowl and are planning on bulding a new center and transplanting the lanes and machines from Dover.  Not sure how far Middletown is for you but at least it's a center going up rather than down.

Fyi...

Seaford Bowling Alley
The city of Seaford grows - another new business is coming to town.
The Trinity Transport Company is moving from bridgeville to Seaford.
They will replace the StrikeMaster Bowling Lane.
The new business will generate about 150 additional jobs.
Seaford's Mayor Dan Short believes that people looking
for a job will benefit significantly.
These are the jobs that have a good pay scale, and have great benefits.
These are the type of jobs that I think people go out in the workplace
to see where they would like to work.
They look at that as a whole.
Renovations will begin January and is scheduled to open in June.
