what is a pin and a x-hole? i hear this alot but i have no clue on what it means....

The pin is a small, off-colored dot about 3/8" across that marks the top of the core. It is used to determine how much instability the ball will have once its drilled. An x-hole, also called a weighthole or balance hole is used to make the static weights of the ball within the legal limits. There can be no more than 1oz of side weight, 1oz of finger or thumb weight, and 3oz of top or bottom weight. Those terms describe how much heavier one half of the ball is than the other half given different ways of cutting it in half. Side weight describes the difference when you slice in half from the bridge through the center of the thumbhole. Finger/thumb weight comes from a line perpendicular to that line through the center of grip, and top/bottom weight from cutting at the equator when the center of grip is at the north pole.

The pin is the small, round dowel that is used to hold the weightblock in place during the pouring of the ball. When the ball is cured and finished, the top of the dowel pin is left to show you the top of the weightblocks position. It is usually quite a different color than the ball itself on modern equipment.

An X-hole is merely a reference to an extra hole that is usually put into a ball to do a couple of different things. It will:

1. Make/keep the ball balances legal to the U.S.B.C. limits
2. Increase/decrease the amount of track flare a ball has and also when it will flare ( up to a point )
3. Depending on where you put it, you can fine tune the reaction shape of the ball with an extra hole, but on a limited basis.

There are a few other things about an x-hole, but that is the basics and I think you get the jist of it now.
