IfI recall what the Lanemasters folks told me, it was sanded to 800 grit; then smoothed with a worn grey nylon pad.

Not for me to say; I am just trying to relay what Legends told me, not evaluate their decisions. FYI the grey pad was "worn"! Maybe that makes an effect that changes the base 800 grit sanded base.

I recently contacted Galen(Legends/LaneMasters layout and coverstock "guru") about getting my Big Kahuna and KONG back to their OOB condition; here are the EXACT steps that he conveyed to me:
1) 400 wet sand
2) 800 wet sand
3) light coat polish with THEIR polish(provided with the ball's purchase)
*** Contact them(888 526-3645) to purchase OR to know a suitable substitute ***
4) 800 wet sand (4 directions)
5) NEW grey scotchbrite
*** Then, to FINE TUNE the ball's reaction even further, you can hit it with light coat of polish OR 600 wet sand(depending upon the type of adjustment that you desire; of course, a strategically placed weight hole is another option in this regard.

I speak the TRUTH !!! This is the latest and the greatest info to answer this particular question. I hope that it helps !!!

Robb,

I remember that process for the Masterpiece, substituting a white pad for the grey pad at the end. I hate the concept of sand/polish/sand, without a technical reason why. Unless the polish does something specific to the particles, which they're not revealing, I see no reason for it; thus my simplified "recalled" process 800 grit sand plus grey pad.

It's still an odd ball: 800 grit sanded solid particle that can only be used on medium-light oil?
