Which one hooks more? The New Standard or Yeah Baby?
« on: December 13, 2004, 12:44:38 AM »
I keep reading different things that seem to contradict each other.  Can someone please put an end to this madness and tell me which ball is the more aggressive of the two?

I have both and to me the yeah baby has more overall hook.. The new standard hooks quite a bit buts more of an arcing type hook, the yeah baby has alot more of a skip/snap reaction. I also polished the yeah baby.

If they only made a ball that would carry that da_n 7 pin (and I am right handed!!)

A Lanemasters contradiction?  No way :-)  My guess is it depends on the lane condition.  The New Standard is said to handle more oil than the Yeah Baby.  So on a longer pattern the New Standard should most likely out hook the Yeah Baby.  However.. the Yeah Baby is supposed to have the higher hook and flare rating.  But it needs a tad bit more dry to release it's energy sooner.  On a dryer pattern the New Standard would bleed off more energy in the heads and hook less on the backend.  I will soon own the New Standard.  No plans to get the Yeah Baby.  So I won't be able to compare the two side by side.  Hope this helps though.

sincerely, ARC7......................

I haven't played the Legend balls yet, but my local pro has taken them into his assortment. He told me about these balls that the New Standard should be hooking more than the Yeah, Baby!. This confirms jkiser01's impression above.
From their surface I would guess that the New Standard has finally a higher hook potential, but, being a solid ball, has a more arcing, steady hook. Less skid/snap than the Yeah, Baby!, which is supposed to be a strong ball, too.

I have both Legends balls and I agree with Arc7 100%. If there is at least a little backend with fewer than 45 feet of oil the yeah baby will hook more.. but the new standard will still hook on almost anything. If theres a lot of oil with almost no backends the new standard will at least hook when the yeah baby i can use as a spare ball. Arc7 said it right on the nose when he said the yeah baby needs a little dry to give it its pop and major hook potential. any more questions you can PM me.

The NS is made for more oil than the Yeah Baby. SO, it will seem on most oil patterns, that the YB will hook more. On true heavy oil, the NS will reign supreme and cover more boards. As always, be careful; appearances are deceiving.

What would be the reaction differences between these layouts on The New Standard?

1.  Label

-----cg

2.  Stacked
----0-0-*

3.  CG Out

I own both drilled as close as possible to being the same and I like the New Standard better.More midlane, better continuation, less over under than the Yeah Baby!.Both are drilled basically label with a 4" pin to pap distance. I tried many surfaces and it didn't seem to change the differences in the balls.

This is an understandable picture, once you see that the New Standard is designed for heavier oil than the Yeah Baby!. You probably bowl on heavier oil for your release and therefore find the NS of greater utility.

This is why it makes no sense to compare apples and oranges - balls not intended for the same oil pattern & amount cannot be compared as to total amount of hook. Because each will hook more on its intended oil pattern.

Both can polished or roughed up to handle a fairly wide variety of conditions. Basically the NS will hook earlier while the YB will go longer. Because of their core, both will hook hard at the break point. Both will widen the pocket enormously over most other balls.

Ya people say the new standard will handle oil better and hooks more, but yet the yeah baby has more particle in it.

The only other bal that has more particle in it in Legends balls in the XXX garanteed.

One guy even told me the yeah baby needs some dry to bounce off of.

YOu are right though, by there specs the yeah baby is natually gana go longer then the New Standard.

Pretty soon im ganna pick up a New Standard or a Big K....what do you think about those 2 balls? IS the Big K for more med oil?

Sir Bowl-A-Lot,

To answer your questions more correctly.

1.More agressive Ball? (Original Question)

New Standard

Why? Because balls that handle more oilier conditions tend to be more agressive by nature.  These balls have to dig into the lane and create friction sooner on flood like conditions.  The New Standard handles more oil than the Yeah Baby, most here seem to agree on that.  So which hooks more?  As stated earlier, choose your lane conditions.

2.Drilling Layout Questions?

Layout 1 (label).....length,arc,controlled backend.

Layout 2 (stacked)...provided pin and cg at 3-3/8, strong, agressive midlane.

Layout 3 (rev leverage)..basically a low trackers #2 layout, decent length and strong backend for high trackers like me.  Strong for rev players.

Just got mine for christmas along with the Guaranteed.  I will post my thoughts on them after I get them punched (not sure when yet).  If they are as good as advertised, my oil worries should be over.  Even though my old Track Contender still works pretty well on most oil I am currently encountering, it has been resurfaced to it's limits.

good luck,good bowling.......ARC7

Thanks guys.  So which of the 3 layouts I listed above, would give the most length and which would give the least amount of length?

Not sure what your style is.  But of the three the label drill should give you more length.  But if you want more backend with the length (and the ball you are drilling does not have accessive top weight) a pin over bridge or ring with GG slightly swung would be good.

I just checked your profile.  Sory I didn't before.  Just keep in mind raising and lowering of the pin will change overal length.  Reaction will be based on other facets of the layout you choose.  Higher (later) Lower (ealier.
