At the Tops of their Games!
« on: February 22, 2004, 08:09:26 AM »
I've posted this similarly before but I'm more and more certain it is correct as I watch each weeks telecast.

As a youth I always loved to watch bowling and the guys who impressed me then and still impress me are the guys who threw the ball level to the lane.

No squeezing down in to the follow line.  No drops!  No bounces, just long and level and noiseless.  A term used by some of the teaching gurus is a long flat spot!!!

Mika has it but it's a loft nearly every time!  Walter Ray has it but with a great twist, he varies the amount of loft based on the oil in the heads coupled with the ball he is using(his secret), much like the Great Earl I believe he is a true master at this skill.

Steve Jaros had it down today!!!

Bowlers who are losing on TV are consistently having one or two drops or squeezes in to the lane on their loss causing shots!!!  Almost always getting a ball squeezed in to the foul line!  Or thrwon with a downward trajectory! This almost always leads to a split on these difficult conditonsl.  As the shot hlts the lane it looses speed slows down and hits too high!!!!  Particularly on these difficult PBA shots with no hold area!

One can count the losses caused by this flaw!  CrisS Barnes, Randy Pederson,
have been victims of this flaw!!!

Bob 7 you are right!!!

The constant levelness of Walter's throws right now makes him almost unbeatable.
Especially when his opponents insist on screwing one or two a game in to the lane.

The way he varies his loft is amazing also!!!

I'm amazed at how little interest in this post, as I believe it is the key factor in all tournaments!!!

When I bowl in a tournament and If I happen to really have this down on a particular day and my opponent doesn't.  I don't care if his regular average is 30 over mine!!  He's DEAD!  Dead, DOA, and GONE!  DEAD!

Any tips on how to adjust loft consistantly with out squeezing the ball.

for the most part, good loft is derived from the amount of knee bend.

this takes the adjustment to the release out of the picture. if are going to loft it 10 feet? you can't help but squeeze unless you cup and lock your wrist.

faster foot speed can also get you a extra foot

I want to emphasize there are three aspects to this.

1. Dropping or Squeezing in to foul line, will kill one on challenging shots!
Can't be done if you want to win!
2. Loft
3. Control of Loft.

Currently, most losers on TV are performing item 1 above at some time in game, splits etc are resulting.

#2 Mika has a lot of loft, great, sometimes.

#3.  Walter Ray is controlling this element better than anyone by a) Never dropping or squozzing down in to foul line, and by B) ADJUSTING the loft to the condition just like the great Earl Anthony!  At the top of his game!
Robert Smith and Steve Jaros have it down pretty good right now too!

REgards,

PS my point is not saying that LOFT everyday is great!  No my point is loft control is great!

Opinions of a lot of folks today is that if you're squeezing the ball, you're not drilled correctly!  Been adjusting my grip for a few weeks now to try to stop "squeezing" the ball, and I think I've got it now!
