Ball speed of pros?
« on: March 09, 2007, 03:57:31 PM »
I was watching the WRW vs Pete Weber in Japan match on youtube the other day and noticed that they clocked walter ray's ball speed at a little over 20 mph and Pete Weber's at a little over 19.  I was wondering if anyone knew the average ball speeds of some of the other pros.  Who currently has the fastest ball speed on tour right now? Slowest?  I'm also very curious at what kind of speed Norm Duke has when he's bowling straight, since I'm also small guy of similar build to him and also bowl straight up the right side with a 16 lb.

abc-tv tracked the average ball speed several times over the years. average ball speed on the telecast was a hair over 19mph. robert smith routinely throws the ball over 20mph----was once clocked at 34mph on a spare attempt.

I think slow on the tour would be 16-17mph, guys like Kretzer or Criss.  Low rev rates are in the 250-300 range, above typical league bowler rates, too.  18-20mph is typical, and some of the fireballers like Smith or Rash are probably 20+.

The guy who throws the hardest on his strikes, consistently, has to be Eugene McCune when he's playing outside. He's a little slower than he used to be, but I remember a telecast he made a few years ago where he was throwing faster than the cameraman was expecting -- especially on his spares -- and the cameraman actually missed a couple of hits.

Did you really just use the word consistent and Eugene McCune in the same sentence??? Hmm... I never thought I would see that day!

I believe that the pro do measure ball speed off their hand.  And that most houses that have speedometers take the speed at the camera.  I believe I read that to get you speed of your hand for the most part just add 2 or 3 miles and there you go.  So if they say you threw it 12 its actually around 14 or 15 miles an hour.  Hope that helps.

Jesus, so that means if my average speed is clocked at 18-19 at pindeck (once 21.6 on dry lanes messing around), that's 21-22 off my hand?  No wonder I have such a hard time making it read the lane.

Tells self for millionth time-- "slow down!"

I don't doubt the stats, but the last few times I've seen Weber, 19mph seems fast. It just appears to me his ball speed is slower than that.
