LL commercials
« on: October 19, 2008, 02:43:11 PM »
I hope we don't have to see the Walter Ray eggs commercial ever again.  So, with that in mind, lets come up with a few commercials for LL.

--Tommy Jones, at a lumber liquidators trimming some wood with a saw.  He inspects the finished edge and says, "Gotta know the wood".

Could run with that idea in many different ways. Leading into someone else packing it up to another person unpacking it and handing to another person putting out in a lane pattern. Sounds like an idea to me.

How is that any different?  What they need to do is do away with the 1980's lame commericials and get with 2008.  Gotta know the wood?  That has fruity innuendos all over it.

I'd rather watch commercials of bowling merchandise - balls, shoes, bags, etc.  Those Denny's commercials are so lame and retarded it is unbelievable.  The one with WRW just makes him look like an idiot and whoever thought of the commercial a total dork.

Make the commercials professional at least.

For LL: Have a pro go in the factory and look on at how they produce the wood.  Use a decent camera with HD technology too.  Then have the pro see a piece of wood that is just perfect.  Then he says, "man I wish we never went to synthetics"

For Denny's: Just watch a Wheaties commercial.  Actually parady the Michael Jordan free throw commercial from the 90's and have some superstar like Robert Smith (please no more WRW), go for a single pin spare.  Keep shifting back and forth to him not eating Denny's (just coffee or some other BS) and attempting the shot.  At the last second, have the ball whisk by the pin and then he goes, "I should of had a Grand Slam."

PERFECT!

Guys,

Relax. We are in the middle of shooting a couple of new LL spots. There's a lot that goes into launching a new Title Sponsorship and the commercial spots should be out after the new year.

Quick question, the Lumber Liquidators team consists of Paker Bohn III, Tommy Jones, Rhino Page, Patrick Allen, Brian Kretzer and Michael Fagan. Who do you think they should feature in their commercial spots? Keep in mind that the spots have to appeal to core bowling fans as well as casual fans.

Tommy Jones, Rhino Page, or Michael Fagan.  We are trying to appeal to the new unknown audience and both have a charisma that even non-bowlers may be attracted to.  Parker Bohn is old and will only appeal to old bowlers.  Patrick Allen isn't even liked by bowlers.  Brian Kretzer who????

Also make the commerical cool and do the complete opposite of what Denny's did to WRW the past 3-4 years. LOL

Necro has a point use the youth, or maybe do it as a Mafia type skit and make PB3 the Godfather.   You could also make it a lefty righty commercial with TJ and Rhino.

Don't spend the money on a few commercials. Put the money in the prize fund so the bowlers can make some more. Hard core bowling fans will always watch the telecast, casual fans are non-existent until the pros start bowling for some real cash.

Thank you for the feedback. Each year the sponsors have a draft for new team members but established sponsors get to keep their big name guys from the previous year so that's why all the LL team members are not "A" list although I do like the Rhino pick (make it myself).

The budgets for commercials are actually something that's worked into the contract and can't be put into the prize pool. Besides I like when a sponsor wants to make their commercial creative bowling focused, it shows they're embracing the sport.

I'm headed to Wichita this weekend for the event. Look for the tool with brown hair in a suit and glasses in the front row, that will be me.

Overall, best advice is to relate the commercial to something that the biggest audience can relate to.  That is why I'm a big fan of parady's.  Don't try to reinvent the commercial.  Use strategies that other commercials have used that were successful or brilliant.  Key commercials I would study up on are:

-The Geico Commercial (no special effects needed, just pure genius)
-Any commercial that uses a cool beat or song (McDonalds song recently with the kid eating to the hip hop beat)
-ANY NIKE/GATORADE COMMERCIAL.  Doesn't get much easier than that.

Also, plan for a series of commericials if possible so the audience can relate with knowledge of previous commercials.  That is why Geico's are so good.  They all revolve around that 1 core idea.

Also, the casual audience wants youth and power (rev's/hook).  So based on that I would narrow it down to Tommy Jones and Michael Fagan.  Only a small % of the population is left handed, so Rhino Page is unnecessary.

But what do I know, its not like I am creative or anything lol....

I was eating and just got the best idea ever!!!:

This is what you do.  You can take the 3 young guys I mentioned.  Have them walk into Lumber Liquidators.  Have 1 guy looking for wood for his house, another guy talking to some hot girl, then have like Tommy Jones see a long stretch of wood.

He looks both ways and then he decides to put some targets at the one end of the wood.  Something like a coke can or something.  Then he says, "hey guys I'll be right back, gotta get my, umm... wallet its in the car"  So he goes out and gets it, comes back with his bowling ball (sponsor zoom possible).  And he rolls it down the board in the middle of the store.

Everyone goes what the hell?  Tommy Jones or whoever says, I just had to try these new lanes.

Then the announcer or narrator says something about Lumber Liquidators as a store.  The 3 guys leave.

On the way out as they grab Tommy Jones, Tommy Jones says, "what about my ball?"

TOO GOOD?

Another awesome idea! (my brain is really working now)

Have the team of bowlers in a bowling alley.  Tommy Jones isn't happy with the load of oil on the lanes.  His ball just isn't hooking good.  They close for the night after practice.  Tommy Jones says, "hey guys I'll meet you guys back at the house!"  He sneakily grabs a board (labeled Lumber Liquidators in big type) and goes down to the 40-50 foot mark and places it over the lane.

The next day, he and the other guys bowl again for practice and the lane is just hooking like mad.

The announcer goes, "Lumber Liquidators, we got everything you need and some things you don't"... Tommy Jones gets his ball back and it is all scuffed up because the boards are too rough on the ball. HEHA!

Parker has been around for awhile both young and old know him, he is a very very nice guy. Ithink he should be used.Rhino is still new enough a lot of people may not know who he is great way to introduce him. TJ seems like a clear choice since he is in the middle of the two.

I'm going to have to agree with the general synopsis on here: Tommy and Michael. They appeal to the youth, and their charisma is much higher than bowlers of old. I've got nothing but respect for Parker, and he's definitely in my "top 5 of all time" list, but he doesn't explode and give the ferocity that the young guys seem to.

Use Tommy and use Michael.
