Why is Kelly Kulick bowling
« on: January 21, 2010, 02:08:58 PM »
Why is she in the TOC?  I know she is a great bowler, but she never won a PBA tournament.  She might have won a women's series event/major, but I just don't get why they put her in there.

All the other guys in the TOC had to defeat some of their fellow competitors at some point to earn a spot.  But Kulick never won a title bowling against any of the other TOC bowlers.  She beat a bunch of women in the Women's World Championship at the WSOB.

This is why I am not a big fan of trying a new ball on a fill shot, or not going for a pin with a split and throwing a line tester etc.

There are times when this just gets you, you never think about it till the end but there is always somewhere that you lost a couple of pins.

Missing by 1, and I bet Pete can think of situations where he threw pins away, for various reasons.

Game 6 of the third block Pete threw a 6- on a double.  So there's one right there.

I guess I'm with the minority on this one. While I respect Kelly and her ability, I dont agree with her bowling in this tournament.

This is a special tournament for winners on the PBA tour. If you havent accomplished that, you should not be bowling, PERIOD.... End of discussion!

If it's Kelly/Barnes in the finals, I'm pretty sure there's a 99% chance that we know who's taking that one.

i understand where you guys are coming from where it's the t of c and the key word there is champions. but we can't single her out, if people say she shouldn't be there than neither should the senior or two regional players. but the pba has to do something, cause it's going in the wrong direction in a hurry. But this would be huge for the pba, maybe a spark to get it going again. just think about how many people will talk about this before the show and how many more will watch it now. i understand from a bowlers perspective as i am a regional player there should be four others in the tournament and not those four. but now we should just sit back and hope the ratings go through the roof sunday and put some life back in the tour that it desperately needs. I mean she won the spot and she made tv. and if you had xtra frame and heard the amount of cheering she had those last two matches. and the 23 hugs she got from every other bowler left in the field and the people who run the pba did the same. they made it feel like she was meant to be there. so if it takes a woman to get the pba jump started then so be it. like machuga said last weekend. it's just a game

she is the women's world CHAMPION she beat every other girl, and she just beat 60+ guys what more does she have to do to prove she has earned it? Male chauvinist.

Great for Kelly! I''ll be in her cheering section Sunday, hopefully she will be using the new Ebonite Mission! I''ve seen some guys at the Pinnacle in Clarksville, TN using this ball and it really looks amazing! Mine is on the way!

Great for Kelly!  In your opinion she did not belong.  Evidence shows that by being the second seed that she did indeed belong in the group.  Thats JMO.

Mark

It is the PBA Tournament of Champions. She is not a champion so how does she belong? Evidence would be a prior championship!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wonderful.

Kulick makes the finals against Chris Barnes, CB beats her, and all of the scuttlebutt will be how he chokes against everyone but women.

I have to agree, although Kelly is a great women bowler, she should not have been allowed to bowl in the TOC.  Whether she wins or not, all this will show is how gimicky the PBA has become.  If she wins great for her, she would have earned the victory by beating all the guys this week.  The real loser here will be the PBA.  Bowling in parking lots, letting non-pba champs bowl in the TOC, and not enough space to mention all the other gimicks that Tom Clark has come up with.  I believe the PBA is on its last breath.  So if this is the way they want to go out, so be it.  R.I.P. PBA

I made the 1994 TOC after winning the 1993 Resident Pro Championship.  I was interviewed by an Akron sports writer at the TOC and told him I didn't feel like I belonged in the field because I didn't win a "real" Tour title but that I didn't make the rules.  Same would apply to Raisin or Women's events.

Kelly doesn't make the rules ... and she proved her ability beating everyone but Barnes -- absolutely amazing.  And her winning surely would draw some mainstream media attention, which would be good for PBA.  I'll be pulling for her Sunday.

As for Pete missing by 1 pin ... getting 6-0 on a Big Four probably was a fry.  But other instances are calculated strategic decisions -- do you go for a 2-10 or 4-9 or just get the count do you switch balls on a fill ball when it might cost you a couple pins but also may give you the look that lets you score better in the next game or more?  Those are decisions we all have to make when we compete.

Didn't Pat Healey make the show at a ToC back in the mid-90s as an amateur champion from a non-PBA event?

It's the Tournament of Champions.  The PBA is free to invite whatever kind of champions they like.  It's why they invite the winner of the Senior US Open (or Masters or World Championship, I can't remember), it's why they invite the RPI and RPC winners.  They've won prestigious national-level bowling tournaments.  I'm surprised they didn't invite more international participation from European or Asian bowling circles.

If there are any PBA members who disagree with the invitation process, they are free to decline their invitation to the ToC in protest.

bottom line is PBA sucks they do anything they can think of to possibly boost ratings
I hate when they show the womens finals during the mens matches
Kelly has no business bowling in the TOC
big deal she beat a bunch of sub par womens bowlers (compared to the mens division) in the WSOB,
and we all know this sport is about matching up to the right conditions etc. for the week of qualifying in order to make the finals
so yeah she matched up better than almost all the guys out there this week
but that does not mean she is better than them

she does not belong in the event period.
If I was 1 of the men that got bumped off the list and I won a PBA tournament for her I would be very very aggravated at the PBA

I also dont believe the Regional slot or the Senior slot should exist either

This just in.......

Next year's TOC "invited" participants are-Jerome Bettis, Woody Harrleson and Throwbot

Congrats to Kelly! Qutie an accomplishment this week! My daughter is 9, watches the show each week, and cannot wait to see Kelly compete.

I do understand the traditionalists point of view, as this tournament was developed for the sole reason to showcase the men's tour TV winners back in the day. (in other words to increase TV ratings)
