WSOB - Viper show
« on: December 05, 2010, 09:51:51 AM »
Anyone else notice that Bill O'Neill used a solid (I think the Taboo is a solid) and everyone else used pearls, mostly polished pearls?

If you wish to ignore the solid/pearl concept, think Bill used a medium-sharp breaking oiler and the others used extra-sharp breaking, polished non-oilers.

Was that the main difference or just A difference?

I would have said speed was a factor but Tommy and DeVaney can certainly throw the ball as fast as Bill. Speed, or lack thereof, seemed to be a factor for Monacelli and Gomes.

I'd also guess that the finals' conditions were slightly different from the qualifying conditions.

Thanks for the great and interesting comments.

Anyone Know if he has made changes to his grip?  What they are?

Watch the free XtraFrame post game show.  Taboo's pin above bridge and MB in thumb with deep fingers drilled.  Also O'Neill's comments during the show about not grabbing it and staying under it instead of around the side of it.

We all can learn from this about not grabbing at the bottom....I am really disliking some of the players (league and otherwise) I see who constantly reef on the ball.  Softer hands are the way to go IMO.

Not sure but i did watch a little preview of this but the Taboo that was being thorw was a pearl not solid unless it was the lights and the oil makeing it look that way

No, the Taboo is a solid. I was wondering if the ball was at 4000 or had some form of polish on it, because I noticed the sheen on the ball as well.

I think it was polished.

If you take a good look at Bill''s grip, you will see he stretched it alot, and he has his finger nails showing.

There are a number of guys who stretch out their grips.  Rhino Page is another big stretched hand.

The only thing I have noticed is his swing is closer to his body, its in more of the "groove" to allow more consistent shots.

This is interesting, because from the touring pro's I know, a lot of them have been shrinking their span in order to do more with the ball and concentrate less on revolutions. I know that Jason Couch in particular has shortened his span in order to do more of what Scroggins can do with a bowling ball.

There's only two ways of throwing a ball on tour: coming up the back of the ball or going around it. One of these 5 bowlers goes up the back of the ball and the other 4 go around it. Bill O'Neill is that guy and his ball roll looked fantastic. I know the other guys bowled fantastic during the tournament but really feel for the last few years coming around and cranking on it leads to splits. It has power advantages over O'Neill's roll but it can lead you into trouble.

I am pretty sure you're dead wrong on this.  There may be some old school guys with stretched spans....but very few players opt for a longer span.  It puts less strain on the hand and allows for more versatility.
