This just in from Kimbos website:
Saturday, 7/12: John Falzone is in for the tournament, and supposedly has some "big announcement" on the TV show tomorrow. We will see....

AT LEAST THEY GAVE US A DEADLINE, NOW.

I was planning on going out on this swing. The whole thing has been an emotional seesaw - I wish they'd just call it on or off. It's driving me nuts.

Oh, well. Off to bowl one of my own tournaments today. www.nwwcba.com

This tournament group might be the only thing left in our area... Sad...

The thing that is frustrating about deadlines is that it isn't the first one that has been put out there this season.  The stringing along is not doing anyone any good.  At least if Falzone and Sommer would pull the plug, work could begin on putting something else together that would allow a phoenix to arise from the ashes of the tour...I'm certainly thankful that Sommer was willing to fund from his own pocket for so long, but in retrospect, I have to wonder if his having done so has allowed potential white knights to keep their funds in their pocket.

I know we've covered this ground before, but I still can't believe Sommer thinks someone is going to cover his losses to the tune of 4 million guacamoleans.  This guy is out in la-la-land somewhere.

What are the PWBA's assets?  A couple of desks and chairs, a logo, a crummy web site, and the loyalty and devotion of some of the finest bowlers in the world.  

The first three are probably worth about $20,000; the fourth you can't put a price on.

So I really don't know what the right number is to buy the rights to the PWBA name, but it ain't 4,000,000.  If Sommer remains adamant about the price, then the PWBA as we know it is dead.

Which may not be a bad thing.  Let's all keep our fingers crossed.

Whatever happens, no more bowling on TV until at least 9/22.  That sucks...

Admittedly there is a little more than that, but not much...lane machines and the shop-related equipment on the truck and in the paddock.  The ESPN contract has some value, the question is just how much...let's face it, a new tour of any type in any sport may not be able to get their foot in the door right off the bat for live coverage, which makes an existing contract worth something presuming the transfer was handled correctly.

I'm not sure you would find anyone outside of Rockford that would argue the point about return on equity...it just isn't probable or realistic to expect such a return.

I've got to give John Sommer III a lot of credit for funding the tour out of his pocket for such a long period now.  Unfortunately, I don't know what the answer is at this point, and it isn't likely that he will recoup anywhere near the $4 million that he has personally funded.  But, I do know that a lot of manufacturers haven't stepped forward over the years to help out, so if the deal goes under, then the manufacturers can expect a decrease in sales out of the turmoil.

It might have to go through something like the PBA did.  Whoever buys it needs to clean house though.  It needs a HUGE makeover.  Even the PBA needs to get rid of Mr. Sixty Feet to Success.  But Jan Shmuck (lol, still love that) and the Dorin sisters, as nice as they are, shouldn't commentate.  Sometimes they sound like idiots with some of the dumb things they say.  I'm STILL laughing about the "oil in the middle of the lane causing them to miss 10's."  They act like they know the ins and outs of the different oils and the amount used (which I don't doubt they do), but seem to just space the fact that most people just know about patterns, and some not even at all.  I really like Randy Pedersen, he's funny, he explains things, and although he screws up sometimes, he's just a fun guy to listen to.  Maybe Jan and the CD's just try too hard sometimes.

I just had an idea....have the women bowl with the men on the PBA. I know it sounds kinda goofy, but hey, if they wanna bowl on tour still and the PWBA is gonna go buh bye, then allow the women to bowl on the PBA tour. If Annika can play the Memorial and a bunch of under 16's can play in the Women's US Open and Nationwide tour, why cant PWBA stars compete on the PBA? Think about it, "On the telecast today we have Robert Smith taking on Michelle Feldman in the Wild Card..." The women on tour can compete with the men no doubt about it. Women bowl the ABC masters (a select few have), women bowl in scratch "mens" league (at least they do around here), and women bowl on team USA/college teams/international teams alongside the men. Why not. Increase the tournament prize funds, allow more bowlers to enter (more money there as well), and put run everything the same. Bowling companies will probably save money by only having to go to 1 tournament instead of two, and having their ball reps work with more than a couple of people, ratings on tv would for sure go up (well at least the ones of us who watch bowling on a regular basis would watch along with people interested in watching the ol' battle of the sexes), and bowling would be in a better state.  I am sure this would turn into the USBC discussion again, but hey I was for it. Just my 2 cents.

I personally think a combined tour, with women's and men's divisions, would be a kick. Ladies bowl against ladies, men against men, but you could have all kinds of fun exhibition events (keep it clean, folks) to keep the fans interested.
Then, also think of all the couples where both husband and wife are on tour - they'd get to see each other!!!

In the late 70s there was an event called the Bowling Spectacular. There was mixed pro doubles, an amateur championship, and collegiate team nationals all under one umbrella. It was a blast. I was there with San Jose State - the whole thing was covered by TV - and a lot of people STILL remember that one as something special. I was talking with Mark Roth a while ago - he remembers that event very clearly, even though he said a lot of events just kinda run together. So it could be something special...
