Having Trouble with Nomad Pearl
« on: February 22, 2011, 03:39:04 AM »
I bought a Nomad Pearl a couple of weeks ago and I am having some  problems with the hit I get from it. I bought the ball and my Proshop operator drilled it pin above the ring and to the right about 1 inch., we were looking for it to get nice length but be smooth of the backend and we got exactly the look I was looking for. The problem is the ball hits real soft everytime. The ball is rolling nice makes a smooth move off the breakpoint but hits dead everytime ( I leave flat tens more than 1/2 the time iIuse it). It does not matter whether I try to swing it or not, the hit is a little better if I go straighter but not much. we have changed the cover to 1000 polished and 4000 polished, i am trying to use this ball when the lanes and heads start to breakdown the 3rd game in a 5 man men lge.

I love Roto Grip and Storm, I hve plenyty of balls from both and this is the first DUD I have every had. What could it be? Could the core be shot in it or do i need to try and re-drill.

try 500-4000+polish......I have had a lot of luck with that surface, it will get it through the heads and turn smooth yet hard....The Nomad Line is excellent and usually carry everything

@prmetme: I find this kind of strange. I have a buddy who just puchased his Nomad Pearl, has it drilled exactly the same as yours and has shot 732, and 697 the past two weeks with his, and this includes a 300 game!

How big of a pin-out is therre on your ball?

My buddy definitely goes straighter with his, and to cure flat tens, he tends to hit high flush on strikes!

Depending on what your PAP is the pin might be too close to you PAP for the condition you are trying to use it on.  This creates a smoother motion but in "most" cases rolls better on a wet/dry pattern.  When you are looking to use a ball with that high diff of a core when the lanes break down, most of the time it is better to use pins farther from your PAP with higher drill angles.  This helps the ball retain energy to get through the transition.  However this is all relevant to how you throw the ball.

I am going to suggest that as long as you are playing with the surface finish; take the ball down to a matte finish. For many pearls this will still get you through the heads fine but will give more "drive" through the pocket. In other words stop putting the polish on the ball after you take the surface down. I would start out at 1000 or 1500 Abralon. If it works don't change a thing, if needed you can take it to the next finer surface.

Or, if you want to find out quickly if this will work; take a green scotch brite pad and very, very gently scuff the surface of the ball with small, over lapping circular motions, you will be amazed how little pressure is needed - if you spend more than 30 seconds to do the entire ball you are likely dulling it more than is needed - I suspect you will be surprised at the change in carry.

I'm on board with Jimmy Martin on this one, the layout may be the cause. You may be able to cure the 10s as well if you tilt the ball a little more at your release point.

Thanks for all of the feedback, I will switch to a maybe a duller finish by hand ( 2000) and try that.If that don't work I might need to re-drill the ball.It is really frustrating what I am getting out of this ball, the ball motion is exactly what I was looking for but boy is the hit horrible.
