4 Inch or 5 Inch Pin to Pap? Pin High or Pin Low?
« on: November 29, 2007, 06:26:07 AM »
I got a Roto Grip Epic Battle and instead of the 2-3 pin I requested I got a 0-1 pin and its close to an inch. The pin, cg, and mb are all in line.

So should I go with 4 or 5 inch pin to pap and if I do pin above, whats it going to matter if the cg is away from my cog by 2-2.5 inches?

Depends on what the top weight is.  Make sure that's actually the cg, too.

If the top is only about 2oz, you can do anything you want with it.  You can drill the fingers a little deeper if you put the pin up.  If the top is 3oz or more, you might have to be more careful how high above the fingers it is unless the pin is away from the grip and you can use a weight hole.

I think that if you put the pin above the fingers, you might end up with little to no side weight but too much finger weight.  A weight hole in the finger quadrant will give you negative side weight; I don't know if that's good or bad.  I hear it doesn't matter.  I've never seen weight holes directly above the fingers, but if you don't normally flare there, it might not cause too much trouble.  Shouldn't need a real big one.

If you put the pin out (i.e., short pin buffer) but still 4-5" from PAP, you'll need a weight hole but it's manageable.

With only 2.7oz of top weight, you might just get away with drilling the fingers deeper or the thumb shallower (if you can).

So it would be best to probably put my fingers, well my ring finger about 1/2 way above pin?

You mean, put the pin under the fingers?  That's the usual thing to do with short pin balls, but with 2.7oz of top weight, you could make higher pin placements work without an excessive amount of trouble.

How about this, what are you trying to achieve? (reaction wise?) Why the worry about pin above?

As long as the CG is above your grip center and within 1" of the centerline your going to have finger weight, regardless of where the pin is. Finger weight will help the ball go longer down the lane. The finger holes are going to have to be deeper than normal to make sure you don't have too much FW. So really the only concern is making sure they don't meet each other.
