Cell vs. Grand Illusion
« on: July 14, 2008, 11:46:12 PM »
To the many Roto Grip fans out there, let me ask a question.

Currently I have 2 Cells, one drilled very strong (Pin under, about 25 deg), and taken down to 500 Abralon. Used this to start team at Nationals, for some PBA regionals on the heavier patterns. The second one is drilled pin up, about 5" from PAP, OOB finish and gives me a nice step down from the first Cell. My question is would the Grand Illusion fit under this second Cell or would it be too much of an overlap? I would look to drill it pretty medium, 4-4.5 pin-to-pap, pin even or slightly up, maybe a 75 or 80 degree angle. I don't want to put a longer drill on it with my ball speed as I am afraid it would go too long then. Thanks to all for your help.

Jorge:

From what I've seen of mine so far, the Grand would be a great fit under the 2nd CELL.

If the Grand Illusion fits right under the Cell I wonder where the pearl cell will  fit when it is released?

RollingThunder:

From my testing, the Pearl is going to go in between them, but the MOTION is different.  As we've seen before, balls can overlap in total hook, but it's the motion that determines our strike % on any given day.  I'll tell you I think the ball-to-be-released-at-a-later-date-that-Roger-won't-tell-us-about could very well be BETTER than the original CELL.  I'm very impressed with it so far.

Steve:

Thanks for the info. I usually just buy Storm Balls but every once in awhile I try another brand and with all the talk about the Cell last year I had to try one. In 30+ years of buying balls the Cell is one of my top 5 favorites. I will definitely be ordering a pearl Cell as soon as they are available. Hopefully the wait won't be much longer.

Just to let you know, Roto-Grip is owned by Storm, so Roto balls are produced by Storm in Utah, so they are really the same company, like how Ebonite owns Hammer, Columbia, and Track

Yes I am aware Storm makes Roto Grip balls but the coverstocks and cores are different. It's my understanding that even though Storm makes the RG balls RG still designs their own balls.

Kind of.  As far as I know it is the same design and manufacturing team.  It is a different family of balls with different cover stocks and cores - just a different brands within the same company.

Even more so, Roto-Grip uses a different resin supplier than Storm does. So their covers are not just renamed Storm resins, like the former Columbia and Track relationship. They are actually completely different.

Jorge,

I recieved my Grand Illusion and Illusion last week.  I will be doing a full comparison video between the cell, grand illusion and illusion.  All will be OOB and have the same layout on them.  Hopefully this will give you a visual of the differences between all 3.
