Defiant
« on: November 25, 2011, 09:20:50 AM »
I was looking at some pictures from the WSOB on facebook and saw that Osku and Belmo both had these balls in their hands. They are also on the approved list at bowl.com. Any information on them?

I definitely like a strong solid ball.  i was looking at something else, but after seeing the video of the reaction  i really like the looks of the way it hits. i have a Critical, and that hits hard .so now that i know that the DEFIANT is on the way, i will impatiently wait for this release. i am surprised to see the price though is higher than i thought it would be. that may hurt Roto in the long run.

Staff orders are supposed to ship around 12/15/11. I am going to order this and will be glad to share my findings once I have a chance to throw a few times in comparison to other stuff in my arsenal.

Bowlersdeals.com has it available for pre-order at $154.95.  I don't think any new Roto release has ever been above $140 let alone $150.  I'm "slightly" disappointed with this.  I guess since it is above the Crown line, it should be the most expensive ball Roto-Grip has ever had.  It makes me think they might have created this "Royal" line just so they could justify the higher price tag.  I still want one though, just don't know if I can plunk down that kind of $$.

Looks kinda cheesey but I'M IN LOVE WITH MY O.G. THEORY STILL so ill pick up one of these for sure..

Anymore ...yes covers and drillings are the most important but I love having a variety of different cores in my bag......or spare room in the house lol...ill gladly add another to the rotation...besides I can't get the shapelock hd core to roll correctly no matter what I do..so a nano like cover on a Roto?...YES SIR!..  Can't wait to smack some ppl around with a stronger theory!

Roto Grip has definitely had balls above the Crown Line price point in the not too distant past.  The Epic line was the last line of RG balls to be at the "High Performance" price point.  However, with the success of the Cells and Theories, there really wasn't much need for a ball in a higher performance category or price point.  Cells and Theories are really a steal at their current price point.

I've been lucky long enough...now I'd like to get good.

How does this compare with the Theory balls. I tried a Theory and also a Critical Theory and didn't like either one. I don't know if it was the core not matching up for me or if it was the drillings but both went straight for me. I got the impression they were burning up off my hand. Even with cover changes they wouldn't work for me. Both  were drilled pin up to go longer but that didn't help. I've still got a Cell Pearl which hooks on anything.

Got a chance to get holes in this one and do some testing and comparing. I put this 60 x 5 x 30. This puts the pin above my ring finger by an inch or so and the mass bias mark right of my thumb by about 2 inches. My first thoughts were as to where I would find this much oil in a center here in central Ohio to use this on house conditions at. On the house shot at the Palace, it was STRONG off the spot and hit very well. I was leaving some 9 pins which I only used to do with a couple of other strong balls in the Utah line up. (Attitude Shift, original Virtual Gravity).

The center put down the Highway to Hell - Kegel pattern for me to practice on the following day. This is a sport pattern that is 40 feet and somewhat flat, but playable without hold area. Of course if I grabbed it, the ball took off towards the 4 pin like it should. What surprised me was the area to the right I was creating.  I kept 2/1 moves left after a couple of pocket shots to see how much more angle I could create and was inside of 20 when I started to run out of room. Then I just stayed there with my feet and cut down how many boards I was crossing in the front and started striking again. My VG Nano was standing toe-to-toe most of the way across the lane, but when the feet and target got separated by 15+ boards, the Nano bowed out gracefully while the Defiant still kept on chugging back towards the hole. I also put my VG Nano Pearl, Virtual Energy, and Nomad Dagger into play on this. With the Dagger, I had to move right of where I initially started with the Defiant and square the lane up more until the pattern opened up. VG Nano Pearl has 2000abr so it hung in there some, but I was about 6 boards right of the Defiant the whole time. The burn that the Defiant left going across the pattern for 20-30 shots opened up the heads enough to get the VE to finish enough to carry.

I am thinking that drilling another to compliment and smooth the surface some more might be the best way for me to use it on house conditions. Right now the box finish is too much as I don't have high speed anymore to force it down lane. I will put this under the reviews once I throw it on the New Years eve tourney that is using Shark on the left lane and Viper on the right (of course I am going to throw it on both lanes....:)
