Epic Odyssey and Neptune

Just perusing the Roto Grip Ball Chart online to see where the new SD-73 Classic fits in...

Seems to me that Roto has two new balls coming out:

Epic Odyssey -- Epic Replacement

Neptune -- Mercury Replacement

Any info on the Odyssey???  I could be quite interested!

Sorry to keep updating my own post, but I have more info:

Epic Odyssey has the Solid Ultimate Vision cover, the same as on the Epic.  My guess is a core switch?

Neptune has Pearl Sure Grip II -- again, I have to assume a core switch?

Oh yes, Neptune the Blue and Greenish Ice Giant; After seeing the Crazy 8 spec sheet on this.   It will probably be my next ball.  Exactly what I was looking for; something longer than the Venus; and my favorite colors to boot.  Sweet.

Looks like they tweaked the core a bit as compared to the Mercury.  Same RG #'s but Orbiter II with less differential (neptune) vs Orbiter I (mercury) .  The multi blocks look a bit different in the Orbiter II?  The numbers look like we should see a bit less flare with the Neptune than the Mercury planet.

Kind of a minor difference for a whole new ball?
Why not just drill the Mercury with a weaker pin position?

Interesting that RotoGrip named this new ball Odyssey since Steve Richter on RotoGrip's amateur staff runs a center in Sheboygan Falls, WI named Odyssey Lanes.  

Steve any comments?  Pay off Hank to get the ball named after your center?

Roto Grip is using an all new formula on their resin's cover base.  It is much stronger in oil(even though the cover has the same name).  I'd expect this to be flippier than the Mercury out of the dry, but still be a step down from the Venus and Saturn.

Earth is actually an overseas ball they released a few months ago. It's a plastic 3-peice, black and blue. Pluto isn't a planet anymore either ...

I actually know little about the two balls coming down the road in January, but of what I do know you guys are already on to.

There are questions here about the slight difference in the Neptune as a brand new release.  Roto fans know that Hank and Roger wouldn't build a ball to put it in the line up if it didn't meet one of two criteria:

1) It fills a hole in the line-up
2) Customers/fan base are asking for a reaction they don't have in the arsenal.

Trust Hank as you have with other releases that this will be different.  Keep in mind, the Mercury has been out 18 months and is due to come out of the line-up based on their predictable schedule.  I personally would like to see a ball straighter than the Mercury for when they get really dry to stay more right on the lane as long as possible.  Merc still made me open up the front of the lane a little too much.

If I remember right, these are numbers similar to the Red Hot Flames of the late 90's - but should have much better hit with the Orbiter core.

Well I guess I opened the can of worms by posting the new balls on the Reaction Chart and also in the ball guide.  I wanted to see if anybody was paying attention and you definitely are.  After reading through the comments I just wanted to address a few concerns and let you know how these balls are going to fit into the line.

First of all the Neptune is designed to be a little weaker than the Mercury.  It has less differential, and the coverstock has been tweaked a little bit.  Many of the staff members were asking for something in the planet series that was closer to the original Sonic X and that was my intention in the design.  By inverting the weight block and bringing the larger flip block the pin side of the ball we are adding more length due to mass displacement away from the equator, this will definitely create a different motion than the Mercury.  Our tests indicate that even though it has a very low differential it still reads the mid-lane better and does not over skid in oil like many of the competitors balls with those same numbers.  It is due to the shape of the weight block and the relation of mass around the midline or equaotr of the bowling ball.

As for the Epic Odyssey, we were looking to also fill a gap in the line of our Epic Series balls.  Many of you like the motion of the Epic Battle and also the Epic Saga, but the gap between those reactions is quite large.  The original Epic is close, but due to its higher RG it has the tendency to skid a little to far in the pattern and get behind the pocket.  That's why I decided to use the the Maximus II core that we use in the Battle and the Saga.  With its lower RG and strong asymmetry it will definitely be one of the strongest most versatile asymmetrical balls made to date.  We are also using a new finish on this ball by going to an abralon only finish which will be new for us.

Hope this helps to clear up any confusion and thanks again for all the support that you all have given the Roto Grip brand over the years.
