Mystic... Venus... Neptune
« on: February 16, 2008, 10:51:57 AM »
Is there enough seperation in these 3 balls to warrent having all 3 balls? Or are they too close?

I've heard the Venus and Neptune are too close to each other to have both... but I'm not sure about that because there is a good bit of difference in the RG Differential in the Venus and Neptune... and one's a Particle Pearl and the other is a Reactive Pearl! Thoughts???

It also looks as though a good arsenal could be:

Quest (Medium/Heavy to Heavy)
Mystic (Medium to Medium/Heavy)
Venus (Medium to Medim/Light)
Neptune (Medium/Light to Light)
Spare Tire (Light to Dry)

And could you not drill all of them with a similar drilling and have a great sequence of balls (letting the coverstock material and core design be what seperates each ball)?

Is there any balls that you change out or substitute out???

Thought???

I don't have the Neptune, but I have two Mystics and 1 Venus.  Mystic #1 is laid out pin down, 4-1/2" from PAP, CG at 45 degrees, weight hole on VAL 1" below PAP.  Mystic #2 is laid out pin up, 5-1/4" from PAP, with the CG at 45 degrees, no weight hole.  Both are at box condition.  Mystic #1 is much smoother, where Mystic #2 has a much harder arc.

The Venus is probably my favorite Roto-Grip ball. I have a label drill on it and the surface is 4000 Abralon + Beans' Secret Sauce.  This is my go to ball on the THS where I bowl league.  I may get another Venus and drill it pin up.  This ball is much stronger than the numbers would indicate, but it rolls so smooth and predictable.  The coverstock, like all Roto-Grip equipment, takes surface changes easily.

The Mystic is much stronger than the Venus and you can definitely justify having both.

For your heavy oil ball, the Quest is a good choice, but I would recommend taking a look at the Cell.

I have all drilled the same and I can't possibly see how someone could say the Venus and Neptune are close to each other. The Venus is a good 5 or so boards stronger then the Neptune, but similar in strength to the Mystic (But the Mystic is earlier and smoother downlane. I think the Pluto would fit perfectly between the Neptune and Mystic. I'm liking mine so far, smooth and controlable.

Do you drill all of your stuff the same... or did you just drill all of these balls the same to get a true comparison?

How would you compare the Mystic and Venus?

I just found this article that kind of goes along with what I was thinking about drilling everyball in an arsenal with the same drilling...

I don't drill everything the same but I like to stick to a few of my favorite drillings. All 3 were pin over bridge, only the Venus had a hole on my PAP.

Overall hook potential i'd say the Venus and Mystic are pretty close, but the Mystic revs up much stronger in the midlane and is smoother downlane then the Venus, which is extremely angular.

"It would be a fun experiment to go a whole league season with a Neptune, Venus and Pluto and see how one did compared to folks throwing premium gear. I bet it would work out very well indeed."

Mark

It's no experiment: I'm throwing just my Venus this year in one league and currently have high average in the league at 231. My other league is second shift following ladies (minimal oil to begin with, ladies + plastic = tremendous carry down = good luck scoring on this) throwing either the Venus DEEP inside or the Neptune ala Mika-style up the track, depending on how my back feels, again carrying high average in league at 217.
I think I get more props because I'm scoring "despite throwing those inexpensive Roto Grips!" Just think what my average could be if I bowled with a high end ball (LOL)
