Roto Staff/Management.....Question
« on: October 12, 2006, 02:21:17 PM »
Does Roto have a policy like Lane #1 that if a ball will not match up to you and you hate it will they replace it or am I SOL? I bought a RS-1 and no matter how I play it, it is so over/under from one shot to the next that I HATE it. I don't want to plug and redrill, since I only drilled it last month. This single ball has made me look at selling/trading all my RG equipment and going totally to Lane #1.

Try hitting it with 4000 abralon by HAND, also maybe a weight hole will tame down an assumed over violent reaction off the dry.  If not keep in the bag to bowl tournaments when the fronts offer so much friction that it smooths it out to where it is usable.  Maybe if Rotogrip balls were overpriced by a hundred dollars they could afford to reimburse everyone who either doesn't throw it good, can't lay a ball out, or picks out equipment that doesn't match up to their style or condition they bowl on.  Get a clue!................Snead

Snead, I ask a civilized question to a specific party butt out junior.... If I would have thought that this ball would have been squirrelly at ALL, I would have waited and paid the SAME money for the new Uranium HRG. I did not ask for a bawling session about how much Lane #1 is overpriced from the peanut gallery.
This ball is advertised to start up earlier in the midlane so I thought I would drill it for a bit more length so pin is above ring and out at 1PM with the cg right below it. And it DOES have a weighthole.

I have a question for you.  What does not liking the RS-1 have to do with any of the other RG balls you have?  You have kept them for a reason.  I don't understand your logic here.

My point was:

I can pick up ANY buzzsaw, put the same drilling on it that the rest of my saws have and know BEFORE I throw it, where it is going to fit into the stable, and know what it is going to do.

My not liking this ball has nothing to do with the rest of them, but I am about 30 pins higher with my average using buzzsaws. I really don't think I match up well to them any longer, (I had an Assault, and Assault Pearl and loved them.)

This translates into better read in the body of the lane along with stellar energy retention down the lane.

The Sure Griptm pearl reactive shell on the Roto Star provides modest length and volatile backend reaction on those medium patterns.

Where does what is stated above about the RS-1 would suggest to you that it would start up early?

"This ball is advertised to start up earlier in the midlane so I thought I would drill it for a bit more length so pin is above ring and out at 1PM with the cg right below it. And it DOES have a weighthole."  SOLUTION: Take the cover down a bit.  Hit it with some grey pad and then polish it back up.  That should take some of the over/under out of the ball.

PS:"Does Roto have a policy like Lane #1 that if a ball will not match up to you and you hate it will they replace it or am I SOL?  You opened the door here....and "This single ball has made me look at selling/trading all my RG equipment and going totally to Lane #1." You think after this emotional illogical statemant you are not going to get a negative response?

Besides for many fans of any particular ball company the response should be that you should stay with Lane 1 so if you shank the layout or the ball just doen't score for you because you do not know how to use it they can make you fell batter by sending you another one.

Work the surface a bit I think you will feel better about the reaction.

Buzz,
My Rs-1 treated me the same when I first bought it. It would hook the lane one shot and then push too far on another. What I found is that this ball does not like  a lot of carrydown or long oil. And if your not consistent about getting it to @ least some friction it will give a lot of over/under. I am not saying that you are inconsistent, its just what I found.

I used Rough buff on mine and have had great success. Having stated that, you might also want to look @ the conditions that you are on. Even though the RS-1 isn't a heavy oiler it does need oil to get down the lane or it will move too early causing the backend to be minimal.

Hope this helps.

Agreed.  Since you've got a bit of hand, the RS-1 will pick up off the spot REALLY hard when it gains any semblance of dry boards.  For you, this creates this hard over/under.  Dulling the coverstock would definitely tame this reaction a bit.  I agree with the previous recommendation of the grey pad.  That should do perfectly.  Also, don't put polish back onto it.  After polishing mine, I went from a smooth hit on the spot to a sharp snap.  With my moderately low-revs, I can get away with this without much over/under.  With your revs, you would definitely have an issue.

If a ball does "one thing one shot and another thing another shot" then you havn't thrown it the same.  The cover or core of a ball do not change from shot to shot, so if you throw the ball the same 2 shots in a row, it will do the same thing... its simple physics!

The RS1 does start up earlier than some pearls due to the low RG core, however being a pearl, and not being desgned for heavier oil conditions, it will still get good length.  Also, if you read the ball picked up early, why drill it to go long?

play with the surface of the ball, or use it on different conditions, but you cannot say a ball is rubbish just because it does not work for you.

never said the ball was rubbish just that I hated it, because of the over/under.....

Wow, you mean you drilled a high differential pearlized ball with a cover that likes to skid and you get an over-reaction off the dry and and under-reaction in the oil/carrydown........hmmmmmmm:  Sounds like Rotogrip owes you an apology to me  It is a condition specific ball, use it on the one it was intended for.........lighter mediums/THS with dry backends/Inside on burnt fronts.  Try bowling with it on a different surface like beat up wood, or in a tournament in which you actually make the cut........whatever that could be.  If lane-one stuff matches up to your style better, stick with it......or you could save some money and get a Brunswick/Morich ball(The Scorchin, vapor/red zones and Awsome Hook/Flip are great pieces of equipment!)
If you like Roto-grip at one point the horizon solid and epic saga are great!

No such policy Buzzhead.  This was one of my favorite balls because of the length I got from the ball and the backend motion was very angular.  Once I applied a grey scotch brite to this ball I couldn't have been happier.  Not many people will dull up a pearl, but I've had some of the best reactions out of these.

I'd highly suggest trying that.

Thanks,

I bet that will work...AND I believe a RS X sounds like a better matchup without adjustments...but adjustments are not bad!

A while back I bought a RS-1.  I had liked some of the previous lower rg pearl equipment I had owned (original inferno etc) and at the time was having some success with the Apocalypse..so thought I would give the ball a try.  For me, the RS-1 was very over/under..even on lighter volume patterns.  I played around with the surface some, but never had any confidence in the ball.  I think that if I would have chosen a layout utilizing a weight hole, it may have helped smooth out the break point, but with the label layout I had chose, no dice.  Rather than taking a chance on plugging and redrilling a basically new ball and still not liking the reaction, I traded it away.  I'm not saying that it was a bad ball (actually, I really liked the color scheme), just not the reaction I had expected and/or hoped for...

..Strapper this is exactly what I am experiencing right now with it.
I too am trying to trade this new ball away, while it is still in box condition.

But if I cannot find anyone to take it off my hands I will try to play with the surface of it.

PS Strapper I was trying to use this ball in Lewistown, and the conditions don't get much lighter than those.....I don't know if you get over here or not?
