Sanding my SS Pearl..
« on: August 24, 2004, 06:18:19 PM »
Recently I found out that my ball speed is rather increasing and that this ball doesn't handle med oil quite well. And now I want to sand the ball down so that it handles med oil better ..

Any idea how many grit should I sand ?

Wow, I must use a ball spinner to sand?

.. My pro shop(not in US) is charging $5 bucks per grit, that means 400 grit ????? ... it costs me lots.

I have a SSP sanded to 1200 and it works great for me on a fresh shot. I mainly use it on wood lanes so if I get to quick I try to slow my feet down and get the ball to read better. I would say start at 1200 and then go down to 800/600 and so forth. Using a ball spinner would be the best way.

As an alternative, use a grey pad and scuff it by hand lightly. This will give the ball surface and allow a little more of an earlier hook.

I would guess that means $5 for each level of grit he changes.  $5 to take it from factory polish to 1000 grit, another $5 to sand to 600...  $5 for each piece of sandpaper he uses.  The money is mostly for his labor.  If you just want to remove the polish, you can do that by hand.  A gray Scotch Brite pad will get you to about 1000 grit.  Spin the ball in your hand as evenly as possible.  If you're actually trying to change the surface of the ball, a spinner is necessary to sand it evenly.

You don't have to you can buy some of ebonite sand blast (kind of messy) or you can use a scotch brit pad.

My question is why are you increasing your ball speed, sure tis going to go further down the lane. Just wondering. I get better carry with less speed.

Oh, cause my previous problem is with lower speed and my ball reacts too fast. Now that I've a med speed, I don't wish to go back to my past. Just hope that my ball will do me some job by itself.

Anyway, Thanks guys. Really appreciate everything. Will sanding it down to 1200 first!

I hated my Silver Streak Pearl for the first 3 months of use and two different drilling patterns.  I finally found a home for it at 600 grit.  Keeeping it dull made it great for the longer sport shots I see and heavier concentrations of oil.  It would roll early due to the dull surface but still make it around the corner when it hit the backend.  I love sanding pearls because you get this type of read with it.
