Starter arsenal
« on: December 22, 2008, 12:31:53 PM »
After rolling nothing but Brunswick for the last 2 years I'm going to try something different. The Brunswicks have been good but right before I hurt my wrist I had bought a Cell and the ball rolled awesome both out-of-box and polished. After talking with Wes a bit I've decided to go all Roto-Grip when my wrist is healed from the surgery. Not only because they make outstanding equipment but also because they seem to have some of the best customer service I've seen, plus I like the fact they don't introduce alot of balls every year. So heres what I had in mind:

Heavy-heavy: Cell
Medium-heavy(rolly): Cell
Medium-heavy(flippy): Cell Pearl
Medium(rolly): Grand Illusion
Medium(flippy): Illusion
Medium-light(rolly): Pluto
Medium-light(flippy): Neptune
Spare-light: Golden Globe

I want everything to be from their current lineup. Noone really uses Roto-Grip in my area so I have no bases for comparison from one ball to the next so any opinions are appreciated. I know surface changes are probably going to be necessary for a few. My stats are in my profile, so tell me what you think.

if ur planning on doing tournaments then that is a great arsenal but if you are just doing house leagues then i would say go with maybe 4 balls total and depending how much hand u have i would go with

cell/cell pearl
grand illusion
pluto
plasitc

HG:300x2(SR300 both)289(sawblade)280(SR300)

2004 NYSPHSAA team champions
2007 NYSPHSAA individual high game(300) and series(1411-6 games)
arsenal: rival arch rival dead flush blue vibe scout SR300 plastic
on the way maybe the sauce or momentum swing.

Keep in mind this is only what I have seen with my RG equipment.

Medium(flippy): Illusion
Medium-light(rolly): Pluto
Medium-light(flippy): Neptune

For me it's more like:

Medium(flippy/rolly): Pluto
Medium-light(rolly): Maybe some sort of controlled layout on an Illusion
Medium-light(flippy): Illusion or Neptune
Light-(flippy): Weak drilled Neptune

Beware of the Pluto it is not nearly as weak as it's advertised to be.  In my hands it is stronger than the Illusion, The Code and Break pearl.

Thanks for the responses. The arsenal will be used for both league and tournament play but the majority of what I bowl will be tournaments.

The Pluto is pretty strong and can move, but has some good natural length.  Don't drill it took weak or it can get hard to control.  My dad was struggling with his until we plugged it and redrilled it with a 3 3/8" pin to PAP layout.  Even with that drill and at 2000 abralon, it's still much longer than either his X-Factor or Action Attack, but it still hooks a ton on the backend!!

Also, the Grand Illusion is really an underrated ball.  I was blown away by how controllable but powerful it was when I got to throw one at a Storm/Roto Open House.
